Ford 3.6 tdi v8 Diesel Engines Achillies Heel ?

    Hi All,
Have been researching the ford 3.6 v8 tdi and finding heaps of horror stories seized engines blown turbos and oil in the coolant etc, etc.

Is there any one who has used this engine as intended , under stress and long kilometers, enlighten me to it Achilles heel and weather these problems can be overcome with mechanical manipulation, or is it a engine best left alone, perhaps the short production run is a indication on these facts.

Your thoughts and comments would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Brett

    Hi Brett
    Ive had my MY08 L322 3.6 since 2014 from 230,000km.

The motor has been relatively trouble free, now at 299,700km.

I recently had the coolant hoses and thermostat housing replaced.

Ive had heaps of other stuff on the motor or car replaced. But the engine has been excellent. I have had the EGR deleted. It has had an oil change and filter change every 10,000km.

    Hi RAR110,
Thanks for that info,it is encouraging to hear.
When you say egr delete does that mean you have removed them from the engine or programmed them out from the ecu programming.
I am certainly no expert but i wonder whether the lack of flow from the egr pushes up exhaust gas temperatures, has any one fitted oil mist recievers within the egr system ?.
If i talk oil pressure has there been any reported oil pressure pump problems with this engine.
    Thanks,
    Brett

No worries Brett. IMHO 10k km oil changes are important for this motor. Fortunately I had a service record from 1st two owners that indicated they agreed with 10k km servicing.

Re EGR, I fitted emulators from about 2016, and recently did a remap EGR delete also.

Oil Vapour only feeds into the driver side turbo. I have done two or three induction cleans using Revive to try ensure there is limited build up.

Just to be clear I have spent plenty on this L322, but the motor itself nothing apart from coolant hoses. Replaced trans/TC, alternator, AC compressor, front struts, water pump, belts/tensioners, trans cooler and pipes, fuel hoses, induction hoses with silicone, hood lining, and resprayed the roof, upper tailgate and bonnet (and had other bits resprayed). Im sure Ive missed some things.

The motor runs so smoothly. You are only an hour or so down the road, you are welcome to call in and see for yourself.

In saying how much i like it, its still ageing and its complicated. Just not as complicated as a 4.4 tdv8. In retrospect I think the 3.6 facelift L322 is the pick.

A DPF was not fitted to Australian L322s, so dont see why JLR would want to program in higher EGTs.

I haven’t heard of an oil pressure issue with this motor.

    Hi RAR110,
Thanks for the information and the offer to come and look over your l322, i still have a lot to learn regarding this engine. I will take up the offer but i will PM you when i am able to come.

    Thanks,

    Brett
