    Engine mods

    G'day All,
I will be heading off on the big lap for the rest of my life.
I'm looking for engine mods to give me some extra power to drag the van around. I have been doing some research on piggy back ECUs to turbos to super chargers. I don't want crazy power just a bit more for climbing hills with the van.
If somebody can point me in the right direction as to what works and what doesn't it would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers to All

I would find a specialist BMW garage, and ask about any mods. ECU upgrade and possibly a larger exhaust system for starters, but make sure you tell them your after more torque in preference to BHP. Also the 5 speed auto would be bettered served with a H/D torque converter and upgraded oil cooler system. The 2 garages below might be a good starting point, there are others also! I have no connection with either business.

I would do the auto mods.

Tuning any engine generally doesnt do them any favours,no matter what the sellers of the tune have to say.

Did you end up doing your timing chains? If so have you confirmed your Vanos is functioning correctly? A few of us have done them and run into the same issue where even though you set the cam trigger wheels with the German Auto Solutions timing kit the cam adaption values are out and need to be fine tuned with a scan tool that can read the adaption values. From another on this site I know that the GAP and the icarsoft don't.

If you have either or both of the fault codes P0011 and P0021 that will shut down your vanos and the car will feel a little sluggish under 3000rpm.

For the towing I'd be putting in a lower thermostat and an additional tranny cooler.

Thank for the ideas, no I haven't done the timing chain. I don't trust myself that far, as you said, doesn't always turn out right.

I was looking at a turbo or supercharger, but it maybe a lot of money for little gain and or reliabilty out the back door.

Has anyone heard of a heavy duty torque converter for towing for the Rangie ? This has been suggested to me.

Rangie is parked up at the moment, water pump pooped itself, I did take all the cowling and the pump off. Now just waiting for parts to come in.

I did give the motor a clean, bit mucky down there, might run cooler now.

Thanks again and Cheers for the help.

In regards to the H/D torque converter give A&B Automotive a call, they are the ZF specialists.

    G'day Laurie,
I rang A&B Automatics and he doesn't do H/D torque converter for ZF boxes, he did give me anothere # whom he recommended and after I explained my case he said I didn't need one.

Thanks again for your help. I might look at getting an engine rebuild prior to my trip. 2004 RR l322 250,000km, could do the timing chain while their in there.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers
    Hans

If your engine is ok and no timing chain rattle, I would just give it a major service, replace hoses etc, some injector cleaner and go for it. I would get a full diagnostic done on the engine before hand though. Compression, fuel pressure and especially the complete cooling system. The coolant lines behind the engine break/leak with age, and probably the plastic header tank and pressure cap etc a priority. BMW rebuilds are very expensive

BMW won't touch the car because it is over 10yr old. I was thinking more Southern Engine Reconditioners in Wollongong. Might just get my mechanic to check all that for me.
