    Wheel nuts

Fixing a flat the other day & had major difficulty with a swollen wheel nut which I understand is a common issue with the OEM capped nuts. Looking to buy a set of replacement nuts before the others start to swell.
Any advice re capped vs one piece, alloy vs chromed vs stainless steel? Also any recommendations for local or o/s options?

My L322 doesn't have capped nuts. I did, however, replace the lock nut with a standard nut.

Yes - I got rid of the locking nuts too. Which uncapped nuts did you use?

It had uncapped nuts when I bought it.

I bought 4 matching nuts on evilbay.

    Swollen capped wheel nuts

My D4 spare is mounted on a wheel carrier. The nuts are chrome plated and all have surface rust. I don’t like the look at all and will be switching to capped nuts.
WRT removing swollen capped nuts, my D3 suffers from this. I bought a 6 Hex 23mm socket. Works well.

When I got my vehicle it had capped nuts, like Jeff I bought a 6 hex socket. Have since replaced with black steel non capped nuts, and kept the single hex socket.

The imperial closest socket has just a little extra room for the cap and that’s what I keep in the car on a breaker bar. Makes life so much easier.

With the metric I spend double the time trying to get the nuts out of the socket.

Yes, I’ve heard that surface rust can be a issue on the solid chromed nuts, especially if rattle guns are used. I presume this would also be the case with the blackened nuts. I did see a set of solid titanium nuts from the US which look pretty schmick but, at around US$400 a set, hard to justify. There’s also a UK firm producing custom polished or machined stainless steel nuts at a more reasonable, but still pricey £10 each.
At the end of the day the original capped OEM’s have lasted over 10 years, so I’ll probably just stick with some after market (cheaper) stainless capped nuts available for around Aud$160 for a set of 20.
    thanks for the feedback.

Good tip, thanks. Wish I’d had one of those the other day. I had to hammer a metric socket onto the swollen nut. It worked but was a bu**er to get out.
