    Replacement Alternator for BMW V8.

    Hi All,

has anybody got any recommendations for a new Alternator for a 2004 V8. LR price is $2700 for genuine.

hopefully I can pick up one in Melbourne somewhere for less…
Note an aftermarket one was fitted a few yrs ago and probably less than 30 thousand km , so would be got to know any brands others have used

I feel your pain. I had the front bearing in mine fail a few years back and the alternator was an expensive replacement. I kept the old one with a view to bearing replacement at some time.

Check for an auto electrician who does rebuilds, some still do; also check Ebay! Just be careful with your particular Part Number; there are new, re-con and second hand for sale. Just do your due diligence and you should be right.

The V8 alternator is water cooled (it fits into the timing cover) so there are few alternatives.

    Does anyone still repair/rebuild alternators?

I’ve bit the bullet and gone with the LR one. Found lots of alternatives on line , brands I’ve never heard of and others that are reconditioned which I’ve also had bad experiences with in the past. This is going to be an expensive bill as I took it to a workshop as it also had a leaking front air bag. Doing the front 2 airbag/shocker , the new Alternator and they also found the water pump is shot is going to put a big hole in my credit card…

I replaced my water pump at the same time. Its bearings were pretty loose.

Fortunately, doing the pump and alternator is pretty easy.

Looks like they are pretty easily rebuilt. I'll be heading down the rebuild road when it's time to do mine.
