    L322 2010 thoughts?

Hi everyone, I've had classic and P38 range rovers for over 20 years, but I've never had an L322 before.
I've come across a 2010 5.0 Vogue (not supercharged) with 320k and I'm looking for any thoughts on if it's worth a shot.
It is sitting out the front of a car yard near me, was a trade in, looking a bit unloved, but it does appear to have been looked after prior to that.
I know I'd be taking it on as a project, but let's face it, with a 15 year old vehicle, they probably all are at this age!

The interior is in very good shape and everything works as it should.
The exterior is in pretty good condition, but it does need a good clean up.
Drives straight and well, steering is good, brakes good, the auto shifts smoothly, air suspension all working as it should, a/c & heater works, screen works.
No rust in the usual spots, no clunks in the suspension, the engine seems to have plenty of get up and go, all lights working properly.
It has a full service history, looks to have had it's oil changes, brake flushes, but the history does not show what bigger jobs it's had done.

While that's all great, my attention is on the engine and transmission.
The timing chains need doing, which I don't mind getting done, (that's not a job I'd tackle myself).
The transmission seems to be working fine, but at 320k it does have a lot of km's on it.
I know these were originally a 'sealed for life' thing, but that doesn't mean the fluid hasn't been changed, I just don't know that history.

I could pick it up quite cheaply, (5 or 6k) but I'm aware it will need attention.
If I get a chance this week, I'll plug in a diagnostic tool and see what codes come up.

I'd love to hear any thoughts from you experienced L322 owners, at 320,000km, do you think it's worth taking on?

    Thank you,
    Pete.

    Which engine?

I have a 2003 L322 and love driving it. I suspect the 2002-2005 models are the last ones with an engine bay that a home mechanic could work n.

I must admit later models are better equipped for toys like screens and audio, phone integration, etc.

Hi Ron, it's the 5.0 petrol V8 non supercharged engine.
As I mentioned, the timing chains need doing, so I need to allow for that.
I'm just wondering how these engines and transmissions are with higher km's on them.
It does have a full service history, but none of the bigger jobs are listed, so that part is unknown.

Hi even if you had to spend double what you paid you will still have a great vehicle for the money.
    I still have my 89 Classic and my Discovery 2a TD5 and 2 years ago paid 40 k for a L322 TDV8 4.4 Vogue
with 160 k on the clock..it now has 185 k and yes I have spent some money on it for normal wear items and have just done 6000 kms towing a caravan over to SA and back( I am in Perth) where my Alternator stuffed up that cost me around 1300 dollars to fix.
The L322 is such a pleasure to drive and leaves a smile on my face when I look at and drive it.
The high kilometres on the one your looking at would not put me off as long as the rest of the vehicle is in good condition and looks like it's been looked after.
At that price I would get it!!
Your only demise would be the fuel economy, however the smile and power of the V8 would negate that😁😁😁😁

Owners of the MY10 5L D4 seem to like the engine.
Does it have CVDs? I think it was only the 5.0 SC that had CVDs in MY10, or possibly just an option for MY10. CVDs are nice but expensive to replace.

Thank you for for the responses, most appreciated!

Bradtot, I currently drive a 2001 P38 with a 4.6, so I'm used to filling that up, I'd like to think the L322 would at least be a little bit better on fuel.
I drive my cars very gently, which I'm sure helps with fuel consumption.
Yes I'm thinking that myself, they are nice to look at, I've been eyeing off L322's for a while now, I love the interior of the 2010 model.
You know, sometimes you just have to go for it and see what happens!

Graeme, I'm not sure if it has CVDs, I must say the ride was superb, much smoother than the P38 air suspension.
It feels much more refined to drive that's for sure.

    Thank you, Pete.

An electrical connector on top of the front shocks is one tell-tale sign of CVDs, another is the reservoir attached to the lower part of the rear shocks. However the independent suspension will be enough reason for the better ride.

Thank you Graeme, I'll be sure to take notice of that when I get to have another look at it.

An update if anyone is interested, I got my diagnostic plugged in yesterday and a few faults came up.
The battery charge is low, as it's been sitting for a while, so this may have an effect on codes appearing.

*U0402-00 Intermittent- Invalid Data Received from Transmission Control Module (TCM)
    *P0915-01 Gear Shift Position Circuit A ? Range/Performance

These could both be related to the auto selector, at present there is a fault with the selector where it can be started, but you cant shift into any gear unless the vehicle is started in neutral.
I did notice after it had warmed up, drive could be selected normally.
They have offered to fix this for me as part of a roadworthy.

*U2003-86 intermittent- fiber optic communication bus
This could be related to the other 2 fault codes I'm guessing

*B1163-15 intermittent- left hand mirror heater output

*B1A96-68 intermittent- bus still active after shutdown request

There is also a fault relating to the ABS, but I didn't get the code for that.

I'd like to get the battery charged up and clear all the codes to see what comes back up.

They have it up on the hoist today for me to see what it needs to get a roadworthy, so will see what they come back with.

Someone once told me Range Rovers are very addictive, once you have one, you can't drive anything else! I tend to agree!

Hi yes a low battery can cause may faults to show up!
charge or replace the battery and then clear all the codes as see what's left.
    They are very battery hungry.
I know this form when my Alternator failed as with no Alternator the car alone just to run needed 31 amps!!!
Also if you do purchase, a must is a Gap Id Tool.
There is so much you can do with this tool.
    Good Luck
