Sunroof leak and electrical issues.

Hi, I’m a defender owner , but a family friend not on this forum yet bought a new d5 with the dual sunroof. Apparently it leaked badly( no seals so water just came in. , twice(not fixed correctly first time) this has made the car smell and stuffed numerous parts of the electrical system like audio, reversing camera , lights and cruise control.
They are being stuffed around by the local dealer and are also trying to speak with JLR who are being very unhelpful . Was wondering is there was any advice.
They are in Melbourne and the only things I’ve suggested are to keep everything in writing and take it to an independent specialist like les Richmond to get a full list of what’s stuffed and what needs to be fixed.

Being a brand new vehicle with a bad water leak, you would be rightly so disappointed and even more concerned that water ingress can be a very nasty thing, as the long term damage to the electronic and electrical systems can take a long time to appear.

A Land Rover has a complex electrical system that can give a lot greif without the added water ingress. ( if it’s effecting systems no where near the roof, I would be worried long term )

i would be suggesting a meeting with the Dealer Principal of the dealership asap to discuss
further.

I wouldn’t be letting anyone other than a Land Rover Dealship look at it yet, as it may jeopardize the outcome....

What GP1200 says and if no joy (and let's face it water can travel to the most unexpected locations so I would be pushing for a new vehicle) then given the cost of such vehicle get your mate to lawyer up and go hard. Hopefully it won't come to that. Cheers

Just washed my discovery 5 and on the way home made a phone call with voice activation. After hanging up, media wouldn't work and indicators stopped making noise when active. Made it home, after stopping and restarting, media worked, but not indicators. Wondering if anyone else experienced similar issues or if it's unrelated to water.

Seems like the entertainment system was not releasing the call properly. When a call is active, all media is paused(obviously) and the fake blinker relay noise is silenced. When the call ends all of this returns back to its previous state. By your description it was like the call was still active.

I would be looking at the phone/entertainment system as a first step. Unlikely to be the water.

Hi Matthew, as Ozscott suggested, get your family member lawyered up VERY QUICKLY.

With any water getting inside a vehicle, if it gets to any of the areas where safety sensors are located, regardless of whether they actually get wet, the vehicle can be dreamed a Writeoff.

It might also pay to get their insurance company involved.

Consumer law covers crap like this, time to visit ACC. Consumer law and Vcat as well Not fit for purpose and I would demand a refund
