Someone is now doing a second battery kit which I will look at for running dash cam and other items.

						Is it just me or is it overly difficult to access the battery?
I assume there must be some special tool required to reach and operate the lock slider from the jack bay because with my largish hands it was a real struggle and the workshop manual is next to useless.

The small battery is only the stop start backup battery. Isn't the main battery under the spare wheel like in the L 494?

Any dealer anywhere should have them (not just LR) or eBay et-al or just find a (fuel-resistant) funnel that has the correct vehicle-side diameter to fit into your opening and then cut it down for compactness (as desired) on the nozzle-side. If your vehicle has a cap-less setup then the funnel needs to be a very close match for a standard nozzle or it won't release and allow insertion. That's about the only trap.
