SupporterHi I have a Disco 5 First Edition with factory 22 in wheels and 285/40/22 Continentals. This is the only size listed in the tire placard. There are a few more options if I go to 285/45/22 - is this legal? The alternative will be to buy a set of second hand 20's where there is a bigger selection of rubber, as my previous RRS TDV8 had 20's.

yeah it's got me beat why they sell a vehicle which they claim to capable of offroad driving and then fit them with wheels and tyres incapable of doing what they claim the vehicle can do.
if you are going to buy new wheels , I think you can get 18s and fit capable tyres to them.
I'm sure someone here can put you on the right path as I've never had the problem , although I go against the placard and fit high aspect ratio tyres.....have done on 3 vehicles

SupporterWheels could be specified in 19", 20", 21" and 22".
The 22" suit the Mall Crawlers and people who consider looks over everything, especially comfortable ride and practicality. Reviewers have been amazed at what a D5 can do on 22" stock tyres, but punctures were very common.
The 19" seem good on paper, but there are not many tyre options.
The 20" rims are fine for touring and many go with 275/55R20 tyres - I have - which come in a variety of makes/tyres and are legal. Nitto Terra Grapplers and Ridge Grapplers and Falken Wildpeaks and BFG KO2s are all popular.
If you are more into tough/hero tracks, go 18" from the two available suppliers of aftermarket rims and you will have a much wider range of tyres with taller sidewalls.

Compmotive is the competition, but everyone here seems to go with Tuffant.
Tuffant make a range of rims to suit different year variations.

SupporterI bought it with only 5K mileage at a repossesion auction. Always wishes I had the 19" wheels to give me a better ride than the 22's.
My tyres are due for replacement so I'll be weighing up the options of changing the rims at the same time. Thanks to everyone here for your continued advice.

SupporterI went to replace my 22" Continental tyres at my local dealer and he told me about Conti (Continental) Silent tyres which I was very interested in because I do like a quiet ride but he skillfully talked me into a set of more expensive Michelin tyres because he told me that they were a better tyre and would be as quiet.
I knew in the first 10 metres of driving that I had made a terrible mistake. The tyres felt wonderful on the road but the noise was (to me) awful. Some people, most people, would not have noticed it at all but I sure did.
It turns out that Michelin have a deal that if you buy 4 tyres (as I did) and you are not happy (as I was not), they will credit them back. I was very grateful for that and asked for them to be taken off my car.
I ordered a set of 285/40 R22 Conti Silent which I discovered have an internal rim of sound absorbing foam to cut the noise. Road noise is becoming more important as electric vehicles themselves make little noise, so several tyre manufacturers are focussing on noise as an important issue.
Guys, I love my Conti Silent tyres. They feel great on the road and road noise is minimal. Highly recommended.
