    Height adjustable tow hitch

    Gday All,

Does anyone use a height adjustable tow hitch for there caravan ?
From what im reading the distance from the receiver pin to the centre of the ball cant exceed 160mm.. looking at the tow hitch on my D3 its more like 230mm and i thought that was close but 160 looks like its just a standard single hieght ball..

Any info or pics would be appreciated.

    Cheers Bulletman

Bulletman.. take or disregard as you see fit..

    Are those mcgowanstan regs?

    Mine fails..
but then I dont have a ball anymore.....( see pic)
and the place where the ball used to be is around 200 from the receiver pin,
the actual place where all the bending takes place is a further 150 out...

    no thats not me....

What that 160 measurement does is cause much stress when reversing up to your van, my measurement is 200 and with the old ball and coupling I had a ONE cm gap between the cup and the tailgate,, only took a couple of nics and-- the new McHitch arrived..

I see plenty of Cruisers using adjustable hitches....

    Thanks Pedro ,

I used an adjustable hitch on the D3 and from centre of the pin to centre of the ball is 240mm and never had a issue with that set up for over 6000kms..
The boss is keen on a D5 so i decided to read the manual and im sure it says centre of ball to centre of pin no more than 160mm.. yet the bloke we bought the van off towed it with a D5 and he gave me the adjustable tow hitch with the van... but i never did ask if thats what he used..

Ive tried to find pics etc of tow set ups of vans on the back of D5s with no luck yet.. if you were to use that measurement the same issue would arise , the van would be very close to the back ... prolly too close for my liking..

Mcgowanistan... or cookistan now is bloody cold..

    Cheers for the reply.

The Boss may be onto something... the most prevalent LR I saw towing a van in WA were D5's....

The Disco 4 had a spec for length also. it relates to the leverage the load puts onto the receiver and bar. and therefore the car. they dont specify a value for nothing.

i had a similar query with my Mercedes sprinter. after talking to a local MB engineer he convinced me to buy an OEM towbar which was actually cheaper than a local generic bar
