Unhappy Discovery 5...just stopped one day while driving. Exhaust camshaft VVT broken apart.

    2017 Land Rover Discovery 5. L462V. Td42.0L 204DTD(AJ20D4)DOHC 16v Turbo Diesel Direct inj. 4cyl 132W SUV. AWD (09/16-07/18)

    Hi Guys,
I have owned 5 previous Discos and Rangies...
My current 2017 Discovery 5 just stopped without warning 2 weeks ago. She's only done 80K Kms. It was towed to a Land Rover mechanical team who said the after removing the upper timing cover and found the Camshaft VVT had broken apart. The relative compression test was performed with PICO software 100%, 100%, 95%, 91% and recommended the replacement of engine and turbo at a cost of $35K which I cannot afford. The car is worth $45-50K in working order.
I'm looking for guidance and advice about what can I do now.
    My questions are:
Is it possible that the current engine can be repaired and fault isn't as bad as presumed, if not can it be reconditioned or replaced by a second hand engine and who could do this for me?

I plan to sell the vehicle after repair.

I thank you all in advance for any advice.
    Shane

It may be possible to repair but you wont know until its partially stripped down, these dealers tend not to want to repair anything and just sell and fit a complete new motor at exorbitant rates. Compression test leads to some bent valves i would expect.
Is this a known failure item on these engines ?

First I would ask LandRover Australia if they will assist with repair costs especially if you have full service history.

If they dont perhaps contact a lawyer to see if you have any hope via legal process.

Below are contact details for specialist Landrover Engine Rebuilders - perhaps they maybe able to advise you of repairability etc.

I did contact them once about rebuilding an SDV6 which they advised was going to be about $25k tow in - drive out, which also included replacement of future problematic parts while they were at it.

I did not go ahead with purchase of vehicle & engine rebuild.

    Hi Shane,
I've just found out I am in the same predicament needing a new engine. I have2017 SD4 2.0L 4cyl Turbo
Intake manifold flaps, exhaust temp sensor and EGR cooler filter blockage . Engine over compression and big end bearing is gone.
$36k quoted for new engine, intake manifold, temp sensor and EGR filter.
Did you approach JLR with any success?
Bought the car privately only 12 months ago so in a big hole with it...should have done my research a bit better.

    As a fair heads up,

Be wary that with major repairs you will often not get the return on investment if you're repairing to sell.

Very broadly, if you have a $10k car and you spend 6k replacing a blown engine you dont wind up with 16K worth of vehicle to sell, its the same 10K car.

The rough numbers I advise are
if the intial estimate of a single repair (replacing the engine) is going to cost more than about 30% of the fair market value of the vehicle in running condition, you're likely to be better off selling the vehicle as a repairable non runner. Lay up the options and provide the info to the buyer.

IF you're keeping the car but it has no real sentimental, historical, specific purpose or other value to you modifying factor. If a single repair session or overall repair costs exceeds 50% of the fair market value of the vehile it may not be worth doing the repairs.

If it has some other specific value to you then the skys the limit, I've just finished up a job doing a rangie classic where the vehicle might be worth about $8k and the customer has ok'd $13k in repairs based on a $16K up front estimate because it was his grandads car.

    Good luck out there

I was talking to a friend yesterday about his experience with a Discovery 5 4 cylinder Ingenium. Just stopped on the M1 and subsequent engine replacement which LRA paid for, but took I think 18 weeks. He was not impressed
I noted recently on a couple of You Tube sites that in UK they rate the 4 cylinder Ingenium as one of the most unreliable engines ever made.

THis doesnt help the OP but my LR Indy told me to avoid the 2.0lt liek the plague due to so many issues. Hopefully this helps someone thinking of buying one.

Good luck. Been there. Engine failure is a real bummer.

    Land Discover L462 SD4 2017

    Hi

I have just found out I have problems with my engine in my newly purchase Land Rover Discovery purcahsed 6 months ago. Been told Engine is likely to need to be replaced.

Has anyone gone down the path of Australian Consumer Law defects, not fit for purpose etc.

I am looking at lodging a dispute with Land Rover Australia on non-compliance with ACL which doesn't need lawyers, but both parties attending.

Wondering if anyone has tried this option.

    thank you
