    Discovery 5 (L462) Recall N798 - Door Latches

    Fellow Discoverers,

Forgive me if this is mentioned elsewhere, I did search but could find no mention of it.

In June 2023, a recall was issued for >4000 Discovery 5s under Campaign N798....

    REC-005703 - JAGUAR LAND ROVER AUSTRALIA PTY LTD - LAND ROVER Discovery L462 2016 - 2020 | Vehicle Recalls

The recall relates to door latches as found on the rear passenger doors of our vehicles. I learned about it today when the door latch of my passenger-side rear door failed to close. No amount of poking or prodding would convince it to close. A quick search on Google revealed a recall in USA for L462s which prompted me to look up our local database. Sure enough, there it was... issued more than a year ago.

Not having received any notification from JRA, despite having all my details registered there, I wonder if I'm the only one. If you're not aware of the recall, check it out, it's important! In my case, until I can get it recified, I can't close the door and I can't lock the vehicle. Driving with an unsecured door is also likley to place me in some jeopardy.

    make and model information

    Make
    LAND ROVER

    Model
    Discovery L462

    Year range
    2016 - 2020

    Affected units
    4,084

    Variant applicability
    All variants within this model

    What are the defects?

Due to a manufacturing defect, water may enter the rear passenger door latches and cause corrosion in the return spring. As a result, the doors may not latch whilst in closed position and the hazard warning light may not display on the instrument cluster as intended.

    What are the hazards?

If the rear passenger’s door does not latch as intended, it could open whilst the vehicle is in motion. This could increase the risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants or other road users.

    What should consumers do?

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Jaguar Land Rover Australia requesting to take their vehicle to an approved dealership to inspect and rectify the vehicle, free of charge.

    All the best,

    Mark

Mine has been in for service twice since the recall - no mention of it on either visit...

Did either of you find your VIN on the list? A friend has a 2017 model and their VIN is not listed.

    Hi Dale,

Yes, my vehicle's VIN is on the list.

I have also learned that a friend who has a 2017 Discovery 5 received a notice.

This might be of interest to those who'd like to know more about the door latch recall. It comes from the National Highway Transport Safety Administration in the USA....

    https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/202...3V393-3658.pdf

Of particular interest is the following couple of paragraphs...

"In May, 2020, the team confirmed the 17MY to 19MY Discovery rear door latch sealing systemcould allow a water flow path into an area where it could enter the rear door latch and ingress
into the Keyless Vehicle KV (fast-latch) actuator housing.

The supplier analysis found that water could enter the latch system. This analysis also revealed
that the KV motor bearings were corroded as a result of exposure to water in what was, by latch
design intended to be a dry environment. This corrosion is progressive and can lead to a state
where the KV actuator motor is able to generate enough torque to overcome the friction caused
by the corrosion, but the return spring torque is unable to return the KV actuation lever to the
home position. This can leave the latch in a state that does not secure the door shut. The door
can appear to be secured yet can open while the vehicle is in motion."

    Hello again,

An update to conclude my recent recall experience.

With the help of JLR, the good folks at Pacific Landrover Sunshine Coast went to great lengths to book me in for recall work on last Friday. As one latch had failed (nearside rear passenger door), it was replaced with a new one, modified in some way, I assume to prevent water ingress. The other (offside rear passenger door) was modified. Both doors appear to be working well now. The work took about 3-4 hours.

Hopefully, that will be the end of it.

Any explanation as to why you hadn't received notification?

    Hi Tony,

No, but neither did I push it, I was just happy to get the work done.

It fits into the same category as “Never annoy someone who prepares your food”!

Turns out mine was done two services ago - they just didn't bother to tell me at the time. It was in the fine print of the paperwork...
