    D5 Starting Problem (Ground Stud)

D5 Starting problem. (Ground Stud, not on the recall list)

My 2019 SD4 Discovery normally starts instantaneously. Recently I’ve had 3 cases where it would not start at all, just a flick of the speedo and taco dials and nothing else. As it is a computer on wheels as my Teck son calls it, I disconnected the battery to reboot the system, and it started perfectly. A day latter it happened again, same solution. The third time luckily was at my Indi service centre. He checked things over, tightened a few bolts, and it appeared to work perfectly.

I was not sure so started checking voltage drops with the ignition on (20 plus amps current). The Ground Stud was certainly defective. I temporarily placed a wire bridge to the other ground post, and all was fine.

A few days latter we replaced the ground stud. The old one was definitely loose, you could see some ark marks. (I suspect the stud hole was too big)

There were no relevant error codes on my GAP Tool.

there was a significant recall (NHTSA Campaign #21V457, Australian recall REC-000827) for certain Land Rover Discovery 5 (D5) models, primarily 2018-2021, concerning a startup battery ground stud that might not make sufficient contact with the chassis, leading to serious electrical faults, engine cut-outs, or complete power loss while driving, increasing accident risk that might not make sufficient contact with the chassis, leading to serious electrical faults, engine cut-outs, or complete power loss while driving, increasing accident risk

    Got it sorted

In my want to make my D5 as good as it could be I had my local LR service agent carry out the earth stud replacement or whatever it is they do as a precautionary measure. Call it a bit of overkill but it's better than being stranded somewhere out in the Boonies!
