New RRS - UK brochure data

I had a look at the UK (on line) Brochure for the new model RRS. Noted that the "maximum coupling point / nose weight" (under the Tech Data section) is 150Kg....max towing weight is 3500kg though.. and the fuel tank is 77 "usable litres" in all but the Supercharged form (where it is 105 litres). Will be interesting to see if you can fit the 105 litre tank in the Diesel (probably not I suspect); and I hope that 150kg figure is not what we call the "tow ball weight"...not much good for towing a heavy Van/ Trailer etc???

If you check the EU/UK towing specs for the D4 et al they have similar limits as you are quoting but fortunately the AU spec gives the 3.5t with 10% ball weight.

If you've seen the UK goose neck towball, you'll understand why they have such a low tow weight.

I suspect that's why the Australian spec'ed tow hitch is different.

If our trailers were setup at 5% of tow ball weight it would be super.

If you have ever towed a heavy load at 5% ball weight like I have, you soon realise we have it very wrong in Australia.

Exactly... 150Kg is more than enough for a trailer 'nose weight'.

I've often wondered why we use higher ball weight. One thought that comes to mind is the state of our roads. Our roads are less than smooth and level compared to Europe, USA etc. The quoted figure is at rest and changes dramatically on the move. When under way and going over wallows the extra 200kg (or 5.7% of the towing mass) might be enough to keep weight on the rear of the vehicle or worse taking to much weight off the rear suspension making it unstable if negotiating a curve or bend. The 10% ball weight figure had been around for years, with the advancements in chassis design, stability control etc it may be time for review by the relevent authorities.

    Hi All,
Collyn Rivers has just published an article on ExplorOz regarding towing. You might find it worthwhile.

    Best Wishes,
    Peter
