    Oil Change SVD8

    I am interested to know how to change the oil. I believe the system is designed to suction pump the oil out but I am unsure where to connect the pump. I am interested in changing oil more regularly than 26,000 k's.

    The suction tube is near the front right of the engine and is fitted with a cap.

    The oil can be drained by unclipping a hose near the front on the rhs (I'll find a picture shortly) and by removing a drain plug towards the rear that drains the turbo return reservoir.

    Well I have now had my first service. After talking to the service manager, who actually seemed to know a little, he said that they did the oil change by dropping the oil from the sump. I asked why and he said they always want to see what is in the bottom of the oil ? I was hoping that the first srvice would get the park aids working on the front, not to be. Service was quite inexpensive, $595.00 have of the service cost of my Wife's SQ5. Car seems to be quicker?? don't know if there has been an update to the ECU's or if it was because I have a Disco sport as a loan car?
    I did have a noise in my HUD , seems it is common and is the cooling fan, many don't notice it I do and find it slightly annoying. I don't use or like the HUD ao I don't want the dash removed to fix. No rear pinion seal leak but I do want mine replaced before warranty is out, if mine isn't leaking some oil will appear before end of warranty I am sure. Starting to really enjoy the car 10 months old now.

    IMO much better to drain to ensure no oil is left in the sump on successive services to prevent sludge build-up.

    this makes sense to me but on another board a member tried both methods and measured the amount drained, His take was that suction got more oil out.

    If using the suction tube indeed results in more oil recovered then it would have to be drawn from areas such as the filter where the oil is well circulated but still risks leaving some in the bottom to accumulate sludge if always changed this way. There was a period when Saab engines were fitted with a suction tube and no drain plug until it was discovered that the reason for engine failures was accumulated sludge so a drain plug was re-introduced.
