Is it a lump of metal for resonance damping?
Looking at a SDV8 and noticed it has a box hanging off the rear diff which looks a bit vulnerable. Anyone know what it is? Is it relocatable?
Anything I need to look out for on the RRS? I’m mainly be doing the daily grind and towing the 3 tonne caravan, not much off road these days now I’m back on the enduro bike.

It looked to have cabling going to it. At first I thought it was a cooler but it looked like it was electrical. Surprisingly it has an e-diff.

Dunno about the RRS, but previous beam axle models with the cast iron/steel vibration damper on the diff have a restraining safety cable attached to (supposedly) hold it if the bolt comes out.

I wonder if an oil cooler has been introduced for the e-diff. No cooler was fitted to the first L405.

That alloy box is on my 2013 L405 also. It looks purpose made to jack the diff until you read the engraved writing which says DO NOT JACK!! I hope any tyre people can read it because it would just snap off if they jacked off it. Mine doesn't have an ediff. No wires to mine either.

It is the "differential case damper".
Manual says:
"Make sure, if the vehicle is required to be jacked at the rear, that the hydraulic jack (with suitable block of hardwood) is
positioned correctly as illustrated."
Illustration in manual shows centre of diff as a jacking point, damper is shown as a "no jacking" point.

According to the RRS workshop manual "A damper weight attached to the rear of the differential is used to control torsional vibrations".
Bot the open diff and the e-diff have this. If you are looking at a SDV8 RRS, they all have the e-diff in Australia, whether they are just HSE or HSE Dynamic model (HSE Dynamic only really gives red brake calipers and higher top speed over the regular HSE for SDV8) . For SDV6 you need to specify the Dynamic option to get the e-diff. You can tell if the RRS has the Dynamic option , and thus the e-diff, by looking to the left of the TR control knob... if there is the curvy road symbol then it has the Dynamic option .
