Range Rover Sport SDV8 2015 burns

    Hi
Couple of days ago my Aunty owns a RRS 2015 SDV8 owning it from new she had endless electrical problems, been towed over 10 times

After it was towed 4 weeks ago it sat at Land Rover for 3 weeks waiting for them to find another issue that it had... Apparently there was no issue and it was returned to them

Next day it was driven to their property outside of Sydney, On their way the oil light came on and the engine lost power they pulled over and noticed smoke coming from the engine bay... They thought it was a radiator pipe issue so they sat on the side of the road and then this happened

it burnt to a crisp !

Can anyone shine some light on what could have happened and what Landrover may have overlooked because the car was still under warranty
I have read about the oil cooler leaking... does anyone know at what KMS this happens at and could it cause the fire if not attended too.

    Thank you

    Thats not a good look.

I think JLR have some serious answers to the questions your aunty will have.

I would be talking to a solicitor if no action comes from JLR.
Hope she kept all the correspondence re the problems she has had with the car.

At least she and her friend are OK.

    Good luck.

Leaking oil cooler gaskets if left unfixed would normally result in a slight burning smell that would slowly worsen over many weeks or months as small amounts of oil dripped onto the exhaust pipe that runs across the back of the engine. It would not go unnoticed.

With the oil light coming on then the fire I suspect that escaped oil has sprayed onto the exhaust, which could happen from an improperly fitted oil filter cap if an oil and filter change had just been done. I always climb up onto my engine with a torch to check for leaks after an oil filter change, as I did yesterday.

Seen pictures of this a couple of times. Seems it happens where the battery is located. Seems like battery igniting, maybe overcharging.
