    Help Needed $8K Repair for Replacement EGR on RRD SDV8 HSE 4.4L T/D Auto MY14.5

    Hello Everyone,

    About 18 months ago, I had an oil leak which required a major repair which cost about $2K.
    Ever since this repair I've started chewing through coolant which became worse. Over the last week I have used about 9 litres & was seeing coolant dripping from under the car so I booked the car into Solitaire in SA

    The quote to repair my car has just come back at a staggering $8K

    This was their assessment & list of jobs to be done:

    Coolant leak pressure tested found leak from under intake manifold, customer approved 3 hours for further diagnostic time to pin point cause, removed intake manifold found coolant leaking. Egr cooler has internal leak causing oil and coolant to fix

    Car Requires


    1. egr cooler assembly
    2. egr cooler valve and gaskets
    3. egr gasket to valley
    4. exhaust manifold to egr gasket
    5. Exhaust gas recirculation valve to crossover pipe gasket and clamp
    6. Oil filter housing gasket to egr cooler body
    7. Water outlet connection assembly top and bottom pieces and seals
    8. heater pipes hard line quick release
    9. coolant pipe from radiator to coolant out let quick release hard line
    10. coolant pipe from coolant out let to egr and oil cooler
    11. egr o ring to intake and gasket to pipe connection elbow
    12. fuel rail cross over pipe
    13. expansion bottle
    14. 5l coolant
    15. labour 8 hours for repair
    16. +2 hours for cooling system flush


    I don't understand how this can cost $8K, why most of the hoses & pipes need to be replaced, especially as the last "cooler" replacement & repair cost $2K (I'll search out that repair).

    Any information about this would be greatly appreciated; I'm back down to Solitaire in SA in about 2-3 hours.

    The EGR coolers don’t mix oil and coolant. They have hot exhaust gas on one side and coolant on the other (to cool the gas) so a failed cooler allows coolant to get in the exhaust (giving a sweet smelling exhaust and white smoke at tailpipe) or exhaust gas into coolant which would pressurise the system and contaminate the reservoir bottle similar to a failed head gasket symptom. I am mildly suspicious have this issue on a TDV6 after changing the oil cooler which can and does mix oil and coolant.

    Changing coolant hoses might be necessary if you had a full choc milk contamination of the coolant with oil as it damages rubber hoses. This will be as obvious as the nose on your face.

    EGR coolers are very expensive.

    The fact coolant is dripping from under car is also odd in this scenario as these don’t usually externally leak unless a hose is damaged

    Leaking EGR can allow coolant into intake manifold,which is not good.I wouldnt drive the vehicle.

    I would head to a good Indie and have this issue looked at,i presume the vehicle is out of any warranty.

    Hopefully someone will chime in your way with a good place to go to.

    A bit off topic,common problem on some LC200 around 2015, certain VINS,leaking EGR coolers,destroyed injectors due to corrosion from the coolant.The faulty injectors went on to destroy the DPF's.

    Hi Guys,

    Many thanks for the info...problem I have is my car is still at Solitaire & in bits, I'd have to pay another 3 hours labor to drive it away to have a 2nd opinion.

    did you give them permission to dismantle and inspect?

    I assume their prognosis is correct.

    The oil cooler sits on top of the EGR cooler and oil passes through the EGR cooler to the block. Hence oil could get into the coolant via the EGR cooler, but only via the gasket between the EGR cooler and the oil cooler or between the block and the EGR cooler.

    Was the previous repair to the oil cooler? If so then it is possible that that repair wasn't done properly, eg the screws weren't properly tightened, and therefore perhaps the previous repairer is liable for this repair.

    Edit: Your vehicle won't be driveable so would have to be transported elsewhere.

    Thanks for all the comments, I agree that it could be related, strange that it was only after the replacement of the oil cooler did I notice the car starting to use more & more coolant until it obviously let go a few weeks back.

    It was difficult to understand as I didn't see any coolant leak from underneath the car until last week, it obviously was though once the system was pressurized after driving for a while & I just didn't notice...also, the engine temp gauge never moved suggesting the engine wasn't getting hot??

    At the end of the day, I'm at the mercy of Solitaire in Adelaide as the independent albeit a nice, very knowledgeable guy, at his own admission, hasn't worked on a lot of the newer RRS, especially the V8 diesels.

    I've managed to negotiate a better price for the service, still way more than I thought but apparently the ECR itself costs over $3K?
