Rear seat folding on 2022 L494

Having never seen a "wagon" style vehicle that did not have rear sets that folded flat I was most disappointed to find that our new car only allows for the rear cushion to fold forward resulting in a sloping surface on which it would be most difficult to carry anything.
MY QUESTION: Have L494 cars always been like this?

While not answering your question, I use a piece of pineboard on the uneven floor under my L322's folded rear seats to provide a base for my fridge.

I had an L322 for many years and the seat fold design in that was great unlike this L494

The D4 was the only wagon i have ever had where the seats laid flat.

A great design, probably like most good ideas, it has now been dropped

Someone on here mentioned the seats on the New Defender don't lay flat either?

That rolling the seats forward, that the Japs use in many vehicles is a **** design, from memory the D2 was similar.
The rolled seats also get in the way of the front seats so they cant be moved back very far, which is also a nuisance.

ramblingboy: Yes the squab folds forward but due to the cushion height (the cushion being fixed in position) the squab remains on a significant angle making it difficult to actually use to any advantage. My old L322 had a much better design but I reckon nothing matches the seat folding in D3 and D4 cars which are a great design. I guess for now I am stuck with what I have.
Even I cannot answer why I sild my D4! Must have had a dumb day.

Rear seatbacks on my 2016 RRS do not fold flat.

Pushed hard the seatback will lock down but not totally flat.

Does make getting stuff in & out via the rear passenger doors a little difficult

Yes, you should see a lever on the side of the seat base. Once you have locked the seat back down by pushing it down firmly, use the lever to un-lock it.

My 2014 is the same, no lay flat but it does lock down. I haven't seen how the 7 seater works though.

MY QUESTION: Have L494 cars always been like this?

Indeed, the seat base is too thick for the seatback to fold completely flat. There is some "squish" in the two sections so if you put significant weight on the folded seatback and flip the folding latch then you can get them a little flatter but still not flat by any estimate.

You can also remove the seat base very easily which then allows the backrest to fold even further - almost flat. So that could be an option if you need the extra flatness but don't need the seats at the other end of your journey.

Instructions on removing the seat base can be found on PowerfulUK's great YouTube channel:
