    Naughty Transmission

    Hi All,

    MY2019 L494 SDV6 SE.

My car has clocked 92,000ks. It's never towed...of that I'm 100% certain, as it has no tow kit :-). Has only been off road once for a week on Moreton Island (driven by me) ...again, I can attest to this with a very high level of certainty, due to the fact that when I purchased the car a year ago, there were absolutely no marks or scratches on any of the bash-plates, etc. It was clean as a whistle underneath.

The car has recently developed a clunky gear change. Most obvious when cold and when descending the slight, long hill at the end of my street, but happens quite a bit in different circumstances. I think it's up-changing when coasting, as the revs don't really alter much. Once the car is warm, the clunkiness does largely go away, but it's certainly not as smooth as it was just a few weeks ago.

The car is booked in for a service next month and I will ask LR to take a look and have suggested that it may need the adaption software re-installed.... however, that doesn't make complete sense to me.

I know my previous D4 had the 'sealed for life' transmission that needed servicing around 100Kks depending on usage, but I'm surprised if this is the case already, as this car has had such an easy life.

I guess if the LR visit makes no difference, I'll look at a transmission service, but don't want to tank a $1K if not necessary ... yet anyway ... LOL!

    Thoughts/experience of this/ideas?

    Cheers,

    Kev.

92000 is getting up there. I was servicing mine every 50000. First serviced when I bought it at 80000. Still shifting nicely at 176000 when sold.

There is no adaption software, all they do is rest the mapping for the trans back to zero as if it was new. Generally its not required unless there has been a hardware change, definitely needs a fluid and filter change.

So they have lied to me all these years .... LOL!

That's what LR referred to it as, when I had gear change issues with my first D4.

I think you're probably right though, regarding it being mechanical. With my D4 I had a loose chassis earth that was causing all sorts of weird behaviour ... terrible gear changes, static discharge noises through the speakers, windows randomly opening when doors were opened, etc. Every time LR said "they'd reset the adaption software", the gearbox was smooth as silk until ... it wasn't again. They finally found that there was arcing under the chassis earth lug. They replaced the lead and then everything was good as gold.

This car has had none of that behavior, so probably time to change the oil and filter.

    Cheers,

    Kev.

The Auto does indeed have the ability to create it's own "adaptions".

In the mapping installed there will be target times for gear shift completion, and possibly base line pressure for each gear which can also be adapted to prevent slip.

I'm not 100% sure on all of that for your auto, but it will be something close to what I've written.

Over time, as the parts in the box wear, the software will "adapt" to keep things within the "target" set by the manufacturer.

These adaptions can be reset to the base, forcing the auto to re learn.

It shouldn't really need to be done unless major work has been performed, and even then, it should still re learn by itself.

Either way you might be surprised what difference a fluid change can make.

    Hope that helps!

I meant there is no external software to load,it's done in the TCM.
All they do is reset it.

About the only way mine changes is if I drive it away stone cold, the auto is reluctant to shift into the higher gears. van or no van. Probably just a self preservation thing..
At 100K I'd be doing the diffs too--- ( after Big Jons comments on mine...)

The car is booked in early next month for a standard service with LR, so I'll talk to them about it while I'm there ....see what they say. I've also talked to an independent that I know, to tee up the transmission service anyway, as the general consensus is that the car has done enough Ks to warrant it.

    Cheers,

    Kev.

FWIW.. the previous time through Adelaide I had the 8 speed software flashed. ( I didnt do the engine... it just doesnt need any more ) It did make a difference with the box deciding when it should change... these things could be a CVT....

    Naughty Transmission :- Update

    Hi All,

As stated before, I had a service carried out by JLR last month. I mentioned the transmission issue to them at the time. They did note the clunkiness in the gear changes. They checked levels and looked for physical damage and leaks, and none were found. The report states that they updated the TCM and PCM, with noticeable improvement in the changes. I have to agree, the transmission has been faultless since being in.

Due to the Ks the car has done, I will still get the transmission serviced, but feel better that there appears to be nothing mechanically wrong with it.

    Cheers,

    Kev.
