    L494 Supercharged Spark plug replacement

I serviced the Rangie last weekend and tackled the spark plugs that I had been not looking forward to. The good news - Its not too bad, The bad news - It makes changing the plugs on a 351 Cleveland in an XT ute seem like a walk in the park......

First up - You need a 14mm spark plug spanner (I did not know such a thing existed prior to this adventure)
The spark plugs are covered by a foam shield on each side of the block, these are retained by two balls that the foam pushes over on the passenger side and a single one on the drivers side and some pipes.
You will need an assortment of extension bars to suit your 14mm spark plug socket as the suspension towers are in the way on some cylinders and the plug is at the bottom of a deep hole.
It took me a couple of hours to do but wasn't difficult, I went with Champion plugs from Rock Auto in the US, the originals were NGK
They needed doing after ~180,000Km and it would seem that fuel economy might have improved a bit over the last week.

    Was that distance LR spec?
I cant imagine NGK using more than 100K if only for $$ reasons..
The plugs look ok,, very LONG!!
What is the gap? and what had the NGK's blown out to??

It was the 182K service, the gap was still about .38 thou, the design of the champions seems a little different to the NGKs so we'll see how they go. I'm sure it will start logging faults if i get misfires :-)

The new ones are a cooler-running plug than the old ones. The electrode material is obviously a vast improvement on normal plugs, perhaps titanium or similar metal not to have burnt away at all.
