If a new engine can be found then get it as it will have the updated crankshaft.
I got a 2014 L494 TDV6 with about 165000 km on the clock.
Recently the crankshaft snapped, destroying the entire engine.
Luckily I got one of these extended used car warranties and it looks like they are paying for a new engine.
Mechanic quoted 18k for a second hand engine or 21k for a brand new one. Makes me wonder if it's worth spending 3k extra to get a new one?
I love the car and would be very happy if I could drive it for another couple of years. But I'm worried that at that age, other parts will keep failing and it'll end up being a money pit.
Is there anything else that tends to fail in these cars that gets expensive to fix?
Inlet manifold and timing belt were replaced at 120000 kms, so they will hopefully last for a while now.

What updated crankshaft?
LR time found the new cranks to be identical to the old.
Maybe the hardening is better, maybe not.
Barum engines is currently rebuilding a 3l which is a replacement engine for the first one that broke a crank in AFAIK a D4 and will not warrant the rebuild. Have a look at the discussion . It is in a video from a couple of weeks ago.
The cranks have a fatal design flaw and it is the luck of the gods whether they die or not whether it is a new engine or rebuild.

If you can get a new engine (and it is a genuine engine) then absolutely take it.
That price looks too good to be true for fitting a new engine.
One question to ask is where did they source the new engine from? There are manufacturers in China that also produce new TDV6 engines. One of the telltales is they don’t have the same markings on the end of the crankshaft.
The person who repaired their own MY15 TDV6 showed pictures of the original and the new genuine cranks. There were quite a few differences in the location and chamfering of the oil holes in both the big-end and main bearings.

Sounds good, thanks everyone.
I'll check with the workshop where they source the engine from and whether it comes with a warranty.
And then will probably do it.
