Every now and then I get a drop of oil on the drive, oil level always shows full so the leak is very minor, Have put new oil cooler on as does seem leek at the top end. Also replaced O ring on turbo feed, replaced one did seem good though. Not concerned, owning diesels all my life I do expect leaks at some stage.
Get a decent endoscope. They save so much time. When I rebuilt mine. I had issues with the copper washers on the turbo feeds. They were leaking before I pulled it down. Both at the turbo and extension pipes. I ordered genuine champion brand copper washers and changed them all out. I also had a weep at the valve cover. It was actually going over the back of the rubber gasket not between the head surface and the gasket. I used three bind to glue the gasket to the cover before I installed it on the last build. The oil cooler joint can go bad and weep up top. I've got spare rubbers here if you want one to fix that. Also when I bought mine the service history said rear main leak. But when I pulled the engine it was dry as. Just oil running back. You can pull the black rubber out of the bottom of the bell housing to diagnose that.
Yes I have an endoscope, not the best quality though. Leak is top end as small amount of oil in the valley , this often leads to diagnosis of rear main seal leak as the the oil flows down though the bell housing , this even fooled the German LR poster.
As for O rings I keep a full set in the car , cooling system and turbo oil feed. I currently use the O ring for turbo feed from Cat parts, get these from my son in law and they are top quality. I have checked the rocker covers, big job if they are leaking as they are also the intake manifolds.
I am pretty fussy with oil changes, after all 5 min job if you pump out using electric gear pump , use 5w 40 , and do every 10,000 Ks. These moters should be good for 600,000 Ks if looked after .
Sounds like you have has a lot of engine repairs, who did the re build for you?
I did the Rebuild.. Was the first and genuine motor before I got to it. But that being said it Was weeping from the turbo oil feeds. I replaced the intake manifold rubbers when I did the Rebuild and the Victor reinz gaskets were what leaked. They are dry as at the moment.. Which is good. If it's got any oil in the valley I highly doubt it's anything else then the cooler circuit or a fast oil change. I always turn my. Filter 4,5 turns and let it sit for 5, then 2 more turns for a minute then off. They can make a mess if not drained first.
OK a big day sorting my small oil leak. The oil cooler sits on a mounting housing that also contains the egr cooler. Big job getting this out to replace the bottom gasket , but now done with new seals and gaskets. The oil leak was very slow and leaked into the vally with a small wall to overflow to get to the bell housing and flow down.
Made so much sense when I got to look at this after removing all the plumbing. I did not do the job, son in law did , gaskets and seals were OME and a $600 spend.
So lets hope I can get another 260,000 Ks. New oil and filter tomorrow, a few parts still to go back on.
