Question How does the Discovery Sports size compare to Discovery’s such as 4?

I’ve been watching Undercover TV Show on Netflix and one of the main characters drives a Land Rover Discovery Sport while another main character drives a Range Rover (looks like a full size L405 variant). What I noticed is that the Discovery Sport looks very reasonably sized, larger than I expected in comparison. Assuming it is the replacement for the Freelander I expected it to be more compact in size.

Reading about the specs of the Discovery Sport I found out it’s 7 seater and shares some of the engines with the Discovery 5 which has me wondering how does it physically compare size wise to its larger brother? Particularly the Discovery 4 range which, having recently become an owner of, is much spacier inside than the old Discovery 1 and 2’s?

Looking at the external dimensions it seems to be fairly close sizewise to a Discovery 2:
Length x width x height x wheel base (mm)
    Discovery Sport - 4,599 x 2,069 x 1,724 x 2,741
    Discovery 2 - 4,630 x 1,885 x 1,928 x 2,745
    Discovery 3/4 - 4,838 x 2,176 x 1,887 x 2,885

    Boot space:
    Discovery Sport - 981L min - 1,698L max
Discovery 2 - 1,147L (the extra vehicle height might assist here?)
    Discovery 3/4 - 1,260L

I’ve Googled and read a bunch of reviews on the Discovery Sport but none have compared it with a Discovery 4 (or even 5) in terms of sizing. Anyone here owned an earlier Discovery 1, 2, 3 or 4 before their Discovery Sport and able to share their thoughts and opinions on the interior room between them?

I have a D4, a L405 Range Rover and a Discovery Sport. There is no comparison between the D4 and the DS. The boot is tiny in the DS compared with a D4. Plenty of room inside for 5 but mine is a 5 seater. It must be incredibly cramped in the third row on a 7 seater compared with a D4. The RRV is also huge inside compared with a DS but not as practical in the boot as the D4. Still much bigger than the DS boot though. The Disco 5 is more like a D4, especially with the very large boot.

While the DS is perfectly capable off road, the ground clearance is way too low and again there is no comparison with a D4. On a beach I am grading the sand with the DS and the centre, usually the DPF, touches down very easily where good ramp over is required.

Great summary there, thanks. Shows how the visual and dimensions don’t translate in practicality.
