I suspect JLR deliberately made the D5 curvy to open up space for a boxy Defender.
D5 is D4s fair successor, no facts prove otherwise, I believe its better all around, lighter, faster, more capable, more comfortable and more versatile. Just needs a twin kaymar and and arb or rhino front. I think within a year we will see way more accessories for the D5. Y62 was/is uglier by a country mile than a stock D5.
On that note a D3 was the most ugly thing out on release, so give it a year or 2 [emoji23]
Not everyone will love the new defenders looks so D5s will have its place, its rumoured to be pretty beasty looking, but again just rumours from people that may have seen it.
In my humble opinion a 4WD doesn't have to win any beauty pageants But it does HAVE to be Capable, Robust, Reliable, Versatile, Easy to maintain and Be Affordable, Comfort and aesthetics are just Bonuses.
IF Landrover with its New Defender release can meet these simple criteria Or Most of them it will be onto a winner.
The early Landrovers series/rangerovers were certifiable Game Changers as were the 1st Disco's, Lets wait and see EXACTLY what hits the streets before we make any judgements.
I for one am not holding my breath as JLR appear to have positioned themselves to play solely in the luxury car market over the last few years and seem to have lost their way or will to produce a good No nonsense 4WD for the masses including the farming/mining sectors, I sincerely hope that my assumption is proven wrong when the New Defender is finally released.
