Times are a changin bud, back in the horse and carriage days Toyota may have been the only regional dealerships and dealers had to be on every corner to keep you going.

I am not pro Toyota , nor am I anti LR but if you don't know the problems you better stop posting your stuff here and spend a bit of time and read back over the years.

I learnt to drive as a child in an S! , grew up in S11's (I grew up all over western NSW on sheep stations)and S111's and the rot set in in the mid 70's with the S111 updates. I was in Darwin then as LR club member and saw first hand the problems LR owners had and saw how well the Toyota and Nissan dealers looked after their customers back then. Now , I dont know your background Blackrangie but as I said earlier I think we live on different planets where LR has a good record.

Defenders have always been aimed at people that go offroad no mater where they live, the new defender will be no different.

JLR are far from silly to bring the defender into the 21st century.

Discovery 5 is currently the best ALL terrain 4x4, the "Golden Goose" as you call it.

Tesla is going a different direction, im guessing rivian will do the same.

Plenty of owners on here that drive all over the big country in both old and brand new LR's, we dont see anyone whinging there are no dealers or indies to fix their cars, why, becuase its a non issue now. It also will be a non issue with new defender.

Just wondering how it is the best?

It maybe one of the most capable vehicles around,in standard form,and under some conditions,but that doesn't make it 'the best'

Going by its world wide sales,and looking at sales here in Aus,it doesn't appear to be anywhere near 'The Best'.

Surely if it was 'the Best',they wouldn't be able to make enough of them?

Sure motoring journalists may take it for a quick spin and give it a few ticks,but that doesn't mean its 'the best',far from it.

Everything you've posted or has been posted points to a capable but sophisticated and definitely not utilitarian, workhorse type 4x4.
It'll be the spiritual successor to the D4 with more rugged looks.
It'll be aimed at hipsters and the like, people who are aspirational, who aspire to 'get out there' but live in the city and draw six figure incomes.
That's Land Rovers target market.

Blackrangie LR's treatment of country dealers which like Rick I have experienced had been ordinary. It's not just lack of dealers but lack of mechanics that know LR that is an issue. For example try getting local knowledge help in Seisa in far north QLD for your D3/4/5... but have a 70 something series Cruiser and no probs. The more complex the LR the greater the issue. We all love LR...that is why we are here but please don't downplay members legitimate gripes. It just winds people up and you end up sounding like a advert for LR. Otherwise your enthusiasm is great.

Good question, to be honest I really don't think its that bold considering the high number of respected 4x4 industry experts, judges and journalists that agree.

Notice the wording again,I cant see anything that comes close all things considered.

I would say gwagon professional currently up there as best offroad 4x4 and SVR best onroad 4x4. 79 series dual cab, best work ute/offroad 4x4 combo.

LR not JLR sell around 410,000 units a year across all the LR models worldeide, D5 is at around 45,000 per year from this total!

Compare that with the defenders best year recently of 23,000 (2015) before that 17k was the average.

So D5 is selling currently selling 2.5x that of the defender, not bad sales considering its only relatively new.

Now do we judge a car by its sales to the market?

Spec wise, Hu@wei's phone is one of the best you can get, why doesn't it sell the most? Well everyone is sucked into s@msung and @pples marketing train for one so that people assume they are the best bet. And another reason, people are afraid is the safety of the device and its makers. Does it make it any less one of the best phones avail? No.

Around 100 gwagons are sold each year in AU, does that make them no good compared to the 200 series. No.

Imo most of the market has no idea how good the D5 is, and to be honest neither did I to the extent i do now after researching it for this thread. If the new Defender wasn't so close, I would be in the market for a D5 for sure!

Utilitarian: designed to be useful or practical rather than attractive.


The leaked interior shot (confirmed as an older pre production shot by JLR and unofficially confirmed by 2 dealers reported on this thread as generally what it will look like) shows a rugged, utilitarian interior compared to most recent 4x4s I have seen including the current defender, 200, Y62, Gwagon, D5 etc due to the positioning of the electronics on the dash, simplicity and the lack of centre console plus hard wearing lower dash and wash out style floor etc. The dash is not trying to be pretty rather practical (utilitarian)

Strong and rugged alluminuim mono.

Boxy (utilitarian) but slightly curved for efficiency body.

Practical side opening rear door,

Modular architecture allowing multiple utilitarian ute style body types (also confirmed by JLR multiple times)

900mm + wading is both rugged and utilitarian.

Again, what have you seen so far about the new defender that is not rugged or utilitarian specifically, "i think a hipster might buy it" is not really a specific haha. [emoji6][emoji1787]

Hipsters buy the old defenders too in droves, does that make them any less utilitarian or rugged? No, that's part of the reason they do buy them.

Dealers where brought up not by me, but by someone else saying there are no regional dealers, i responded simply that its false as have others. Quick Google search found a good number all in small regional towns (not city's) found a few more this time:

When (It seems to be particularly Toyota owners) say misleading myths like that im going to state the facts every day of the week. Its just a downright false statement.

Whilst i respect real life experiences of people at Indies trying to fix their landies as opposed to a dealer. The point had nothing to do with peoples experiences rather it was that there is a network in regional AU.

There is a good network around Australia, could it be better? yes, JLR has many more models than in the past and sales are growing in most places bar China(electric will fix that), no doubt we will continue to see the JLR signs popping up more snd more around OZ.

Just to recap, Are there regional TOWN(non city) JLR dealers and service centres in Australia , yes, more than most people think it seems.

Has the universe of new Landrover ownership imploded in Australia because it doesn't have hundreds of regional dealers, not to my knowledge. Generally speaking people on this forum seem to get along just fine with the current JLR regional dealer network, Landrover Care/roadside assist(heard great things).

In regards to indies not knowing what to do with Landies, I would say the same would be the case with most if not all modern (5 star safety rated) four-wheel drives these days, however this is to change soon as I posted above with new mandatory manufacturer information sharing. [emoji7].

From what I understand no matter where you are in Australia LR will sort your vehicle, i guess that's a major benefit of having a new vehicle under warranty.
Apparently you have Land Rover Roadside for a few years even after warranty if you are serviced at dealers and can also pay to extend it past this. Maybe others know more?
