    Please explain?
And by previous defender what are you referring to? The puma or all of the previous "defenders"

The Defender was one of the few vehicles which could be driven straight out of the showroom to do a circuit of the country.

Correct however without any disrespect to defenders or series, its fair to say its for most generally not comfortable enough for long distance family touring or daily driver duties out of the factory.

For sure you can use defenders as genuine dual use vehicles and of course pumas were the closest, however from what I've seen people will add more powerfull engines, upgrade brakes, enhance clutch or add autos, add lux seats, sound deadening, double DIN stereos or even add air susp like the ECD, ABM or VB kit to help aid its onroad use manners.

New defender was a very very hard task, try to keep it looking defenderish, keep or improve iconic uncompromising off-road ability (drive out of factory and drive around oz or moab) and also make it an enjoyable, safe, efficient and comfortable long distance journey whilst still being able to use for daily duties. True Dual Purpose.

So far from what ive seen they are ticking all boxes, but early days.

The Defender is an easy to live with Daily Driver in standard trim. You must be a bit soft. 😉

    Won’t be retro...

Before 2013, I wondered why anyone would want anything else. My family wanted more comfort (AC that worked, a radio you could hear, reasonably quiet). So I went to test drive a Puma, which I disliked and found to be an overpriced version of what I had. Even though they were 20 years apart, I liked mine better apart from the AC. 6 speed was just annoying. The salesman talked me into test driving a 3.0 early D4. Wow. I knew I would have a lot bigger chance of convincing the family of a trip in this.

Then a bought a 3.6 L322 Poverty Pack. The family love it, and we do more trips. It’s easily as capable off road as the 110. Now, the 110 so rarely gets used for anything.

So I suppose it’s relative, and each has there own preferences.

The old Defender was commercially unsustainable, as it was unappealing to the mainstream, and so was destined to end.

To survive the new Defender must be better on road (safety/handling) and as good off road (at least with respect to traction), and very appealing. Inevitably I think it will be closer in under skin design to my L322 than the previous Defender. Actually closer to a L494 than my L322.

I think that’s a good thing. One thing I agree with Jerry, the previous Defender was an antique in comparison to the design and build quality of the current LR model lineup.

I can drive the defender from crack of dawn across the day and into the night only stoping when nature calls.

I tried that once in a holden cuze and felt sick and sore. Stopped to power nap 4 times during the day. It was just so boring to drive, I wanted to set it on fire and hitch hike!

Ive done it in a disco, and that was not so bad but I would never pick it over the defender for a long run. It keeps me engaged. If im going to drive for hours I want a car that needs to be driven.

A lot of people can't stand long drives. Maybe its because they sit there with one finger on the wheel barely driving it!

BUT - if I am a passenger , thats a whole different angle! A 110 with a bed in the back would be perfect. Or any car with a bed in the back and a bag of valium.
