What was the last basic Defender sold for?
It's all about braking standards. Bigger brakes equals better braking over shorter distances.
That's an advantage both on motorways at high speed and in normal driving, as well as for towing.
18s should be fine, I think. I'm saying that as someone who likes the 16s on my current Defender.

						I can’t find any indication on the BFG site about which sizes have LT ratings. tyresales.com.au though shows only a couple of LT-rated KO2s and 275/65R18 isn’t one of them.
It looks like BFG have cut back on the LT options. My D4 is running LT265/60R18 that it appears I won’t be able to replace.
It’s pretty funny to say big wheels are necessary for high speed
They are necessary because they look good
And perhaps fit bigger calipers
But then again what diameter are Formula1 wheels

18s are bigger than they need to be to pull up a 3T wagon if Toyota can do it on 17s
