And thats what impresses me about this thing, and why i can't see me ever wanting to own a little overstressed diesel again.
I worked out that if i took the patrol to the cape and back from where we live, it would cost $300 more than our old amarok, worth every cent.

The fuel usage on my D2a V8 would bring tears to your eyes But the 79 series V8 gets about 15l/100k and that's towing a 2t van, This is why I like the diesel V8 idea for the new Defender.

I like all those things about the Y62, but just can’t come at the middle dash design. It’s had to look past the bang for buck.

Best we could get in a 79 when away was 14.9, not towing.
Y62 gets 20-23 towing a 3.5t van, which is better than the 200 guys are getting.
The worst we have had is 15.1 towing our campertrailer (amarok was min 16 towing same camper), best is 10.1 down the hwy not towing. With those figures, its not worth the extra expense and upkeep of a diesel v8 imho.

Folks are wrapping them in charcaol colours, they look good after this, may do it myself. Only downside i can find with the vehicle.

The missus drives the 79 series and tows the van when we head off on our trips, I don't like the idea of her towing my boat.
We usually sit on about 90kph, This not only saves fuel But at that sort of speed there is less chance of doing a mischief to the van or God forbid my boat [biggrin]

Little off topic I know but my heavy D2 lifted and 31 inch duras averages 14.5 - 15 in and out to Brisbane and 13.5 on highway. It even averaged 15 doing the Cape trip at GVM and a fair bit of stuff on the roof rack. It averages just under 15 towing a 750kg boat and close to GVM for camping and fishing trips. That is the reason I couldn’t see the value in a td5 for my application in terms of fuel saving (mine is manual and that makes a difference). Now my mates have Tritons and similarly laden they do have considerable fuel savings.

I rekon that a small capacity petrol engined Defender would work for me. I don’t do a lot of towing, and outback trips are done in the 101 (25L/100).
