I love the old full size Jeeps.
Our family traveled a lot of Australia in that big old beast.
When I started working for myself in 1990 (at the ripe old age of 25 Won’t be retro...) my work truck was a 1970 J3000 Gladiator.
Impressive flex from the spring over front end in that old girl too.
The leaves had no camber, they were dead flat so they had prodigious droop even though they were square cut.
The Wagoneer used under slung front springs and sat quite a bit closer to terra firma.

    New Defender content?
Umm, I used to use my old one as my work truck, I hope they don't totally abandon that market, but I won't hold my breath. Won’t be retro...

[QUOTE=Zeros;2884764][QUOTE=blackrangie;2884746] So with the unreleased defender already showing to be massively more rugged that a D5, it would seem there maybe quite a bit of commercial potential with the new Fender

Dude, the new Defender hasn't shown any such thing. ...this is pure speculation on your part. LOL Are you on the JLR payroll?
Hey, you will notice i said, "it would seem" and "maybe" thats by definition "speculation" would you not agree?

Imo what has been shown already is much more rugged than a d5 as seen in pre production interior leaks, under shot in vid showing extensive underbody armour, great approach, ramp over, departure, sill height, excellent rumored engine/power combos, air con/volume tactile dials, 3 seat front (all but confirmed)

If you have seen the interior front of a d5 its far from rugged in standard form and yet they have won a German D5 Govt contract (stage 2 reportedly coming soon) no doubt in commercial form.
It stands to reason the more durable defender will do even better from a commercial point of view the world over in response to earlier comments on this thread and others about JLR products no longer being commercially suitable.

Passion for a brand is free for JLR my friend. But JLR if you are reading this sign me up Won’t be retro..., wouldn't mind getting paid for telling the truth.

Saying im on JLRs payroll, is like me saying others are lobbiests for Toyota mascarading as defender owners on a Land Rover forum. I wouldn't do that because its not respectful to single people out because I disagree with them or becuase they are passionate about their favourite brand. You have said that about 2 or 3 times now. Once is funny, its not anymore and saying it doesn't make the facts in my comments go away.

Lets keep things nice mate and mutually respectful, even if you put a smiley after a comment that disrespects passion for LR's it doesn't remove the offence.

Getting back to speculation of the new defenders commercial viability and the reason i posted the D5 article in that that I found on the Range Rover Clubs page (no they are not secret JLR agents).

40 supplied with air/coils/winch etc 40 more to come next month i would say based on artcile.

I say it's not speculation in fact it's more an educated assumption based on evidence to date.

I think it was a perfectly reasonable assumption or am I way off the mark somehow?

Another paid article on expedition Won’t be retro...

The Discovery 5’s of the German Federal Police – Expedition Portal

Comparing the standard Discovery 5 interior to the police spec there is not a huge amount of difference from the photo showing other than the usual police accessories grafted in.

I didn't realise the discovery doesn't have the 3 touch screens like the Velar and then you Evoque. Good to see they still have tactile buttons where it is needed.

So comparing the standard D5 (bottom pic) to the new defender leaked photo(google it) looks like there is one less dial under the screen and a volume control.

Yawn, I expect the new Suzuki Jimni pickup is more rugged than the new Defender will be. If you need to put 'armour' underneath something then it ain't rugged.

My brother just bought a new Jag E-Pace , took the train to Melbourne to pick it up 2 weeks ago. Arrived at Red Faced dealer to find it was turned around by customs at Perth and sent back to Singapore. Not just his car , the entire ship , because one vehicle had a stink beetle in it.

you think the dealer would have notified him.

Anyway, they gave him a D5 Loaner . Reports the D5 is not a patch on his GU as far as off road ability but nicer to drive, not $100,000 nicer though.

All I see when I look at a D5 is a Freelander, an ugly one .

Interesting some of those D5's are on coils.

Maybe new Deefer will also have coils on some models, although EAS is far better off road than coils ever will be.

No not wanting to cause a coil verses EAS debate again

Scary apart from the Humvee diehards I reckon no one will be spruking a coiler independent suspension over air suspended with a cross link function. I mean I am in the die hard live axle camp for offroad but I could be convinced into a independent suspension with the right travel and cross linked air suspension.

    Cheers

JLR have categorically stated the new Defo will be the most capable vehicle they have ever made. Not a stretch to expect it to be the most "rugged" also as part of that. It is also a logical placement of the Defo in the stated line up. At least to me...
