Funny thing is my brother who is of the Nissan Patrol persuasion drove a Discovery Sport and was impressed enough by its on-road ability that he bought an E-Pace, so now there are 2 in the family, but alas not an I-Pace yet .
Another thing to notice in the video is the silence of the defender as it gets near the animals.....quote
...errr yes , it has an animal alert sensor so that it automatically quietens all systems so as not to disturb them.
It will work fantastic against kangaroos, emus and wombats.
I watched the videos and there was too much inspirational African music, drums and general jibber jabber to be at all confident that you could hear the silence of the vehicle approaching animals. The fact that the animals did not run away probably just means they, as park animals, are used to vehicles even ones with dodgy xamo (Or the new Defender was sprayed with burley).
I'm not getting caught up in inspirational video adverts (which these vids are) but there are bits that give me some confidence that the Defender may be good. But clearly we have a long way to go before a reasonable assessment of that can be made.
I too am unimpressed with the wheel travel when the Defender is in raised mode but let's face it it is not live axle. That is gone. The best traction off-road comes from wheels on the ground. Absent that the next best (and yes compromised thing) is traction aids and here LR have a very impressive system. For the vast majority of owners their total package will be all or more than what they require. I have seen first hand situations where D3/4 run about of ability and live axle continue on but it is right at the ends of what the live axles can do (without extreme lifts and disconnecting sway bars etx) and for me I would accept the compromise.
Cheers
