You seem to be leaving price out of you comparisons BR. Not sure how you can say it can compete with a Prado for example when I could go buy a new base spec Prado (Just - if I was in the market) but I'm still shy $20K for a base model Deefer (Can't afford that at all). That's a big difference and while the Deefer may be 'Value for money' in your terms (I don't think so personally) - when it comes to someone laying down their hard earned, that $20K will make a big difference.

As 101RS said - I think it is mostly competing against other models in the LR line up.

The other relevant price comparison from the old Defender's direct competitor.

    DRIVEAWAY FROM

    $70,140

    LandCruiser 70 WorkMate Wagon 4.5L V8 Diesel Manual 4WD

So a base Defender is almost $10k more than a base 4 door, Toyota Landcruiser noting the Toyota Tax is included in the Toyota price.

And when we are at it - a basic Disco 5 S on the road is $79,949.01 without dual range and air suspension. No one at LR could tell me the price of the dual range/air package but I did find an article that quoted $5600 for dual range/air package plus 3rd seats so the cost would be somewhere around $4000 for just the dual range and air bring the price of a basic Discovery S with dual range to about $85,000 on the road so not a lot more than the equivalent Defender.

Exactly Garry 👍 ...If D5 is the competitor for 200 series, that makes 70 Series the the main competitor for Defender. And there’s no point competing with G Wagen, because there is no market willing to pay for it.

The problem is that Land Rover have priced Defender to compete with G Wagen, not Toyota 70 series! ...What was the point of “putting G Wagon in the shade” if no one is going to buy it? And remember Jerry also said Defender would compete with Hilux! LOL.

In fact all LR vehicles are priced to compete with G Wagen! Doh.

Prado is not a competitor for Defender IMO. But most will buy Prado or 70 series over Defender at current prices.

According to the D5 spec from the landrover web site... dual range is $940, electronic air susp $2110 to add to the S badge.

When I went to the build section of the Landrover website and built a standard D5 S - I then ticked the dual range box and the air suspension automatically came up but then air suspension came up as a delete option - so it would seem if you tick the dual range you get air automatically unless you delete.

Sot your $940 + $2110 = $3050 so that makes the price of the closest D5 to a basic 110 Defender is $82,999.01 making it only $3316 more expensive than the Defender.

My guess is that similar price comparisions would exist right across the Defender, D5 range making both vehicles competitors to each other.

Contrary to what BR thinks, the new Defender has lots of competitors both here and in the US and it will not compare well based on price.

If LR dropped the price $20K, everything changes.

Be more durable, carry more fuel, perform better off-road due to having better angles, last longer, get updated easier, have more accessories, carry more people without a third row, run bigger tyres, have more travel, more clearance, have configurable terrain response, higher roof load, carry spare on back.

D5 and one of the best all terrain 4x4s on the market, but its no defender. There is very little they actually share according to engineers.

I haven’t read every post but what I’m saying is for joe average that hasn’t had a Land Rover before, it’s hard to justify the extra money over what they’ve always bought. This alone will keep it from getting the sales you think it will.

Can you imagine a mum and dad having a coffee after test driving a Land Rover for the first time & Prado, looking to upgrade to a family FWD.

Dad: I really like the Defender, what do you think?
Mum: yes I like the dash and inside and it was nicer to drive than the Prado, but it’s $18k more. Let’s get the Prado and go to Bali instead.

Short term gratification over long-term Aussie pricing
