Unlocking factory features through aftermarket CCF activations

Anybody got any views on this kind of thing?

Land Rover Defender L663 Features Activation All-in-one Package
    Activations – Vulkan Automotive

I contacted the last one to see if anything was available over here, they said not at this stage though they're eventually planning to distribute via a network of agents but not for some considerable time.

Googling found no availability for similar activations in Australia.

I can do all that. But only if the car is with me here in Sydney.

That's good to know - at least for anyone in the region - unfortunately not even close for me as I'm in Cairns but will be looking you up if I'm down that way anytime soon. BTW - your avatar always makes me smile.

It would be interesting to map out what configurations of vehicle lend themselves to these upgrades afterwards - eg what minimum spec from the factory is required so you can enable the various options later.

Am I reading this right? These companies can cheaply enact idle software for a few hundred bucks that JLR want to charge you thousands for on your initial order?

It makes sense that all of the software is already in there, all it takes is a couple of ticks and it is yours. It makes no sense for LR to provide different computers due to the options.

    My queries are:

    * I assume that you will void your warranty..?

    * There are already reports from the US that when people have done this, the next time there is a “update over the air” the options are turned off again, back to what you bought..

It will be interesting to watch and see..

Yep, no secret there. Had a guy at work enable the Navigation on our base model Hiluxs a few years back. Took him 5 minutes - it’s all there, just disabled.

Not how warranty can legally work.

And yes, just like reprogramming an engine ECU with a remap was often re-written over by dealer updates.

IBM have been doing this for donkeys years with their mainframes. One company I worked for wanted a system upgraded with an extra 2GB (a HUGE amount then) and two more CPU's. Tech arrived, put a floppy disk in the drive, typed a few commands, removed said floppy and left. Five minutes max and the job was done. The bill, however, was eye watering - around $50k.
