mobile data " no sim Detected " KVM and proximity key issues

HI everyone i have a defender 2020 diesel and i am having an issue that hopefully someone can shed some light on. i purchased the car second hand with only one key about a year ago and set up my in control acc but the car tells me that i need to connect to the internet to sync the account to the car. the system tells me that i am connected to my home network but it says Mobile Data " no sim Detected " i am told by the dealership that this is the sim that is installed in the car by land rover and it is required for the car to connect to the internet for vehicle updates etc. since this issue has arisen my smart proximity key is not being recognised all the time and i have to hold the key under the steering wheel to start the car some times.

i took the car to the dealership so they could fix the issue but when i picked the car up they told me that because i only have one key that if they reboot the KVM that it may lock the car down and without the two keys that are programmed to the Kvm that i will have to buy a new kvm and another key so that it can be programmed to the new Keyless vehicle module. so my questions; is the no sim detected fault connected to the "smart key no longer in the Vehicle fault" will rebooting the KVM without the second key lock the vehicle down. and if i get a second key for the car now and have it programmed will that work with the current KVM as the old lost key would be currently programmed to the KVM. really what i am asking is am i stuffed here and will I have to buy a new KVM and new key and then have them programmed to the module and installed in the car to fix it and is that the issue with the in car sim ? or is the no sim detected issue still going to be there after replacing the KVM and key. I know it is very convoluted but i can't find anything online that helps me and i like to explore all the options before spending 4k + with the dealership. thanks for reading this.

    Hi deffie and welcome.

Let's chip away at this as I expect there are a few unrelated issues that appear to be joined.

Firstly, the key intermittent-not-working problem. Given the age of the vehicle the battery might be close to flat so try replacing it:

    Land Rover iGuide Online

Secondly, the only-one-key issue. When I bought mine only one key was issued due to an international shortage of computer chips. So when that supply chain issue was sorted the dealer called me in for a second key to be supplied as a scheduled recall. They programmed it while I waited. Pester the dealer. That lost key if ever one existed is such a drama then you are not being served well by Land Rover.

Thirdly, dealer service....find a different one! Better ones are out there. Your vehicle should still be under warranty and they have an obligation to sort it out.

The SIM issue I doubt is related but I've been wrong plenty of times before!

If you reply here don't mention the dealer's name.

The SIM in vehicle is an option. I don't have one in my 23.5 P400SE and i still get OTA updates. The sim mobile data plan basically makes your car another mobile phone, and is totally unnecessary in my view. The car has a factory fitted wifi connection that talks to my home wifi when in range. There is no requirement for a SIM in vehicle to get OTA updates. They are telling you BS and you need to call them out on that. If under warranty they need to sort out for you. Each vehicle comes with 2 keys from factory, unless due to the chip shortage, but then you're owed a second key. If this involves 2 new keys and a new KVM, then in my view, LR is up for the cost of that. Be strong and firm with them, if not, go to another dealer, or the ombudsman or the ACCC.

    Hope this helps you.

I didn't opt for any SIM I recall in my 23.5 D300SE but there is a sim installed anyway. The OTA updates require a cellular connection and therefore a SIM/eSIM somewhere. Also my settings in the car show a Telstra plan is active and, of course, I can lock/unlock and start the car using my phone.
Just looked at my build sheet again and 036AH Aus & NZ 3YR Connected Service Pack shows as a standard specification. Expires 2026, so will see what happens in a couple of years.

Look under Subscriptions in the remote app.

Interesting, if you didn't opt for it and they've added it in anyway. I purposely did not opt for it, and my vehicle still gets OTA updates, so perhaps a SIM somewhere, but not as an active cellular service.

Here is what the iGuide says about connectivity for a 2020 Defender:

    Land Rover iGuide Online

Some vehicles have a SIM slot for a seperate nano SIM card and others have an embedded SIM card.

    I have three subscriptions:

"Connected Navigation Pro", "Online Pack with Data Plan", and "Remote". The latter allowing access via the app expires in 2025 (three years from purchase). The other two appear to be perpetual because an expiry date is not mentioned????
