    Just bought a 1963 88" GS

    Gday everyone,

I am the extremely happy and proud new owner of a 1963 88" GS land rover. It seems to be in great condition and is a great driver. It needs a bit of work as usual, but i think i have more than enough parts in my ever growing collection to sort it out.

I am unsure about how original it all is, I had difficulty finding any REMLR info on it. It was purchased from Morgan in SA and has been driven around on historic rego for years now.

It has lots of extra's compared to my 1969 109" GS, including a spotlight on the drivers side, two red centred spotlights on the bullbar, a vice, and a fair few extra dials on the inside. It also has extra rope tie points on the bonnett as well.

Any ideas on its history/military use and some info on the extra additions would be great. I would love to restore it back to original specs if possible.

    Thanks, Will.

Hi, if you post this info on the REMLR forum you will get some help as well.

    Good looking rig.

spot lights aren't original, side mirrors not original, pintle hook on front goes to the back, take off vice, checker plate on bumperettes and rear spare and outside will be original, but you will need TAC plates and bridge plate.

All the extra guages on the dash will be add-ons as well, but if they serve a purpose I'd leave them on.

    Cheers

Thanks for the help with the ARN, I must have looked straight past it on the REMLR database.

I have a 1964 88" as well that has been stripped of almost everthing military and has no engine. The firewall is almost 100% perfect but painted cream. After finding some rust high up in the floor pan of the 1963 88" i am thinking of doing a firewall swap.

The only difference between the two firewalls i can see is that the wiper motor is in the dash on the 64, and individually through the windscreen on 63. Which is the correct military version? And is the firewall from the 64 compatible with the 63?

    Thanks for any help.

The rolling chassis on the 1964 88" is very good and i will be looking to move it on very soon if anybody knows someone interested.

Can you show a pic of that?? In dash wiper motors were series III's or very late series IIa's, without a pic it would seem to be a series III or late series IIa firewall which means would not be a '64

Hi there, thats interesting info. The nomenclature plate says this is a 1964 88"GS, but i guess the plate could have been swapped over. I am having trouble adding a photo of the fire wall in the 64, but i can say it is pretty much the same as my 69 109". It would be great to use it if i could in the 1963 as it would save me lots on rust repair .......

Trying to match up and build a correct military vehicle is harder than it looks! Even when you think you have bought one that is close

I guess i could learn to live with a bit of rust and just enjoy driving it, it is almost 50 after all.
