Series III Ex Army Reverse Light
1978 Series III ex military.
Screws that hold on the clear reverse light lenses are all stripped in the heads. They are of the long shank with short tapered thread end type, according to the parts manual this particular screw is not made anymore, they thread into floating brass nuts in the light assembly base and I have been unable to find an appropriate replacement screw.
Any suggestions for a solution would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Remove the brass nut and insert an approptiate metric RivNut from the rear of the backing plate then use an appropriate length metric stainless screw available from any fastener supplier, auto parts place or ships chandler.
Socket headed cap screws are even better, but you need to carry an Allen key.

Thank you for such a quick response! Sounds like a good fix to me, can you get riv nuts at your general nut's and bolts stores? I have never seen them.
Cheers.

Yes
They are known by various brand names, Rivnut, Nutserts etc.
There are special tools to insert them like a Pop rivit, but you can also insert them using a long (hex headed) set screw and nut of the correct thread.- Run the nut up to the thread of the set screw to the head then add a flat washer and then screw the three items into the Rivnut.
- Drill a hole in the fitting so that the splines on the Rivnut have to be forced into the hole.
- Insert the Rivnet and "insertion tool" into the hole, the same as you would a pop rivit.
- Then with two spanners one on the head, one on the nut tighten the nut against the washer and Rivnut while pushing the Rivnut tight against the hole.
- Tighten the nut until the back of the Rivnut clamps the body of the fitting as you would expect a pop rivit to clamp.
If you can get to both sides on the Rivnut, it is sometimes helpful to protect the Rivnut thread if you fit a locknut to the back side (opposite end to the other nut and screw head)while clamp up the Rivnut.
