'96 V8i LPG CONVERSION GOOD OR BAD

    G'day All,

I have a '96 V8i manual with 235K on the odometer and a good service history. The Disco is in sound condition and will be a keeper.
My question is, do these engines work well with an LPG conversion? The Disco will only be used on trips & offroading as I commute by motorcycle. It's a thirsty bugger, for such a small eight. I've heard that some engines run very well on LPG and others do not, I'm not sure which category the Disco falls into!

    Thanks in advance

LPG works well on D1's PROVIDING THEY ARE TUNED FOR GAS!!!!!!!!

I can't emphasize this enough, most LPG problems on the D1 are from assuming petrol specs for timing, plugs and leads will do. If you do the right thing then they go well on gas. You will need to find someone with good experience with these vehicles as they are a bit different to other modern cars.

My '97 V8 runs fine on LPG. There were a couple of teething problems when it was first installed but it's not missed a beat after they were sorted out.

Keep everything well maintained and you'll be fine and save heaps on your fuel costs

My 95 V8 (346000km) runs better on LPG than petrol. Its on LPg 95% of the time and has been for the last 5years. Will never go back to a diesel.

Had 3 V8 Landies of different engine configurations done locally here.

If done right, they are the last thing to give you any grieve and Yes, running costs as far as fuel goes at least are nearly halved.

I had Bee Utey put gas in my 94 disco with a 4.6 RR motor in it. I cant recommend enough how good it is, BUT Bee Utey is right it must be tuned for gas, I had it serviced in town and have to organise to get it retuned for the gas.

I put gas injection on my D1 and couldn't have been happier with the conversion. Get an LR shop who deals with gas to do it. If you were in Vic I could give you a couple of recommendations but I dont know about nsw suppliers.

My previous D1 was a 96 auto on gas and it was fantastic.

It ran perfect on gas and petrol. There was a very very slight reduction in power on gas, but it was only just noticeable on take-off and not something most people would even care about.

The biggest problem you might have, depending on your use, is range on gas.
You generally only can get 300-350km (maybe a bit more or less) out of a roughly 70L useable tank.

If the tank goes under the back, in a twin tank setup, you also lose the 80L petrol tank and it gets replaced with a 35L sill tank, which won't get you far on petrol.

mine is 60lt in 3 tanks on the back so kept the main tank but lost some luggage space and cant use the fold out seats after a year of it i get 250km for the 60lt tankfull.will an average cost between $35-00 and $40-00 per tank.

working it out on $ per km it is the equivalent of 10lt per 100km if it was petrol, close enough. so for a 2.75tonne constant 4wd I think that is bloody good.

I have a 96 V8i on gas. Orignally, it was a Venturi System and I have changed over to a Vapour Injection setup. Both systems, dependant on driving, get a range of between 250kms (city) and 350kms (highway).

The reason I changed from the simpler Venturi to the computer controlled Vapour injection is that the later provides the same power as petrol. Having said that, I am told that a good "old style" set up should give you similar results.

The tank is a 60 litre scuba (i.e. 3 linked tanks) set up in the rear cargo area retaining the original petrol tank. It was placed with a bit of precision so that the rear dickie seats are still useable.

Bee Utey is correct in saying that you need to set timing to suit and that all ignition components are suitable for lpg. And as always, Land Rovers need to be worked on by someone who knows them.
