95 v8i using fuel while running on gas

Hi, My v8i landrover was using around 10 ltrs every 2-5 tanks of gas. When I started the truck it was smelling like its running rich and always ran rough especially around 60k/h, no matter what timing changes were made. I finally connected a switch to turn the fuel pump off at the relay. The truck runs smooth with the fuel pump off, it feels like a new car. It will start sometimes 4-5 times before needing to turn on the fuel pump, revs slightly and switches straight to gas, perfect! What could be the problem? as far as I can see the fuel goes straight to the injectors, could these stick open? Or is there an electrical fault, it obviously switched to gas and turned off the fuel, but it still dribbled through. It used fuel according to how I drove it, lots of revs up hills etc, the fuel went down fast, highway it took a while, up to 4 tanks of gas. The gas consumption has also lowered after fitting the switch, from around 20lt/ 100ks to 17/100. I have electric probs with the car, could it be a brain fault?
 Any help really appreciated,
 Mike

You may have a failed fuel pressure regulator, this is fitted to the rear of the fuel rail and has a vacuum hose to the back of the inlet manifold. If the regulator is perished inside, fuel will be sucked into the manifold via this vacuum hose. Petrol pressure will be higher under load. Take the hose off while running on gas and look for petrol dripping out. I replaced a ED Falcon regulator recently for this reason.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue but my old 3.5 disco used to do the same thing. Instead of the injectors stopping when switched over to LPG it was wired up so the fuel pump would stop. Discovery fuel tanks are fairly well sealed so I'm guessing it's a matter of expansion and contraction of the tank itself allowing fuel through at low pressure... (My theory anyhow...) lol
