    Classic onto LPG, - where to put the bits.

    The Great Abyss has to be put onto LPG, so this is a general query as to the preferred locations for mounting the Bits & Pieces. - Looking for a gasfitter who'll let me do some donkey-work to save a few $$s...

    Going for a vapour system as per Bee Utey's suggestion, and a kitted OMVL R90e converter is in the offing, with a re-tested tank in the aft Cargo hold.

    Any ideas, suggestions (separate fuel gauge or interface with the normal one?) are welcome.

    Hi James , Just from my own personel experience from when i converted my soft dash to lpg, it was the worst thing i have ever done.
    It went from being a great reliable rangie to a temperementle thing.
    I went the whole hog and did the exhaust, RPI ignition and magnecor leads etc.
    Every time the LPG was serviced it was over $500 for some new part or other so any savings was well gone. From what i can make out it was mostly down to dirty lpg leaving a tar in all the parts.
    after 18 months i removed everythging lpg and its once again been a very reliable rangie.
    I know its each to there own and i really hope you have a better run at it than i did but i thought i would just share my experience.

    also make sure the convertor goes as low as possible as its a bugger for air locking the cooling system and giving false "slipped liner" symptoms.

    James these are pics of my setup I have.
    I have twin tanks underneath.
    For me it was/is the best thing I have ever done to both rangies and the gas setup I have has been on 2 rangies with the first clocking up well over 500000ks and now the current one is about to turn over 400000kms as well but 200000k on mostly gas. I have just replaced the OMVl convertor but it had been on for 7 years and I had not touched it in all that time.
    AAA autogas did the conversion and adjusting but I actually fitted the convertor and tanks but did not do any electrical or gas plumbing, theye did that. It saved me heaps of money.
    I dont think they are around anymore,they were in Carlisle. They also did my daughters discovery1 as well and once again I fitted the convertor and they did everything else.
    If you can find them they guys name was mark and he was ex MTT buses but was very very good.

    Great Pics Brad. Many thanks. I was wondering if the washer-bottle would need to move...

    Bee Utey suggests a re-built ZAVOLI as being slightly less prone to back-firing, and the price works out the same anyway (evilbay OMVL plus a re-build kit) Also a box of electrowizardry/O2 sensor for max. economy.... my driving force. SWMBO likes my Classic, -NOT. Partly becuase of "unreliability",,, - but I suspect because the pax. seat is... inadequate in its width... (The seat controls placement is... unfortunate, and prone to inadverdant activation)

    So yours is 100% LPG ? - Starting problems ?? Or tiny petrol tank?

    Is Woodvale north of south of Geralton ?

    PS Currently run an imported 100% LPG Mazda 626. Already done 415K, and the converter has just started leaking... Cannot speak too highly of LPG as a trouble-free fuel. Just the lack of range.

    James mine has 2 sill tanks fitted for petrol, so 80 ltres of petrol and 78 ltres of useable gas, been like that now for almost 20 years on 2 rangies. My petrol tanks are galvanized inside and out with 3 mm bashplates as well.
    I also fill both petrol tanks from the original filler at the same time.
    I have a cross pipe on behind the crossmember that connects both petrol tanks together.I have had one backfire on the 89 vogue in 7years.
    and about 4 in the previos 82 model with holly carb.
    Woodvale is between whitfords ave and ocean reef ave freeway exits

    Yes, noticed the coiled wiry things between your axle and chassis... mine uses rubber bags... so little chance of sill tank capacity, if at all. - Air tank on pax side and EAS valves etc on driver's side chassis rail.

    For the time being, if I'm allowed by SWMBO to proceed... (or manage to do it on the sly...) I'm thinking of a tank east-west across the back seat. The rational being... for me, its wasted space seeing as I can't reach in from the top-tailgate, and need to open the lower half and crawl in. On the older classic we used as a tractor, the LPG tank did'nt seem to take up any useful space, despite the mathematics !

    When things get closer, I'll mount an expedition to the Great North Land and have a closer look at yours, if I may.
