Diesel and LPG

I was down at KLR Automotive on Friday and they were installing LPG injection systems to a couple of diesel Landies, a Defender and a Disco.

Later in the day they tested the Disco and said it had more power and was quieter than the standard diesel.

As soon as I find out more details, I'll let you know.

Not wishing to be pedantic ..

But they run on compressed natural gas, not LPG

The main problem being availability. Buses in Brissie and some Elgas vehicles have been using it for quite a while, but that's OK in the big smoke. Would be a problem in the bush I suspect.

Hi Rosco
Not sure that you are correct. There are a few systems around that add a small amount of LPG whilst running on diesel. The LPG works as a catalyst, allowing the engine to burn 100% of the diesel entering the motor, resulting in more power/economy and cooler running.Diesels only burn something like 70 or 80% of the diesel that enters the motor.
Yes there are CNG only systems available, but normally only fitted to trucks, busses etc.
I havent looked at those links posted, but have seen other lpg/diesel systems featured in magazines and web sites. They are new to australia but very common in USA and GB.

Wow, iM impressed with the GRS system!, I wonder also if there is a you would be able to use Nat Gas from the house in the Nat gas system, like a connector to the outside barby fitting - i bet theyd ( Govt) hate that imagine how cheap it would be.

I thought it couldnt be done. I would interested to know how much etc. Is the tank the same size as ones used in petrol engines? If it was, i would be more inclined to put up with worse economy and have more space, the luggage space in the Series I disco is bad enough as it is.

But i would be interested to hear more Ron. Matt

you can do a quick and dodgy home made version for under $100.
9kg barbi bottle, throttle switch, 2 x solonoids, gas spud for intake,
flow control valve, gas line @ $15pm . kicks in only at full throttle (or how ever you set the switch ) only improves top power not economy. dodgy dodgy dodgy but beats paying $1000 to a muppet to do the same thing.

some good threads on outer limits about lpg setups.

I went for a spin in a 300Tdi Defender today that had been fitted with the LPG (not CNG) system.

This thing went harder than my V8. The difference with the LPG on was really noticeable. It pulled like a train from idle - just as if the turbo was working from down there.

It was up to 120km/h in much less time than when the LPG was off.

Hi all,
i just called 2 mobs that do LPG Diesel conversions.
20% savings and 10% power increase.

$3k for the conversions.

Now $3K is roughly 2600 litres of Diesel at $1.15 per litre.
at 10l/100km that is 26,000km of travel for the same cost.

If you work it out on what it will cost you until it has paid for its self.

But you are only saving 20% on fuel with this.
So then you need to add the cost of LPG as well. at $.50 a litre.
you use 20% lgp for the 80% diesel
So that means you need to cover 130,000km just to cover the Diesel Savings Plus the cost of LPG. So all up i'd Guess you would need to cover 150,000km before you were ahead.

Then if the system has a failure out of warantee or you have a Mech failure due to the install or design then you will be up for more $$

Its a bit like the Zeus Gears, If they last and cause no problem then in 200,000km it would be worth it.

Id say its worth looking at if you had a heap of cash to get rid of for "tax" purposes.

I think it comes back to the simple idea. If it was a economical idea there would be more on the road.

I cant see how $3k could be the price.
Parts are about $1000 retail.

Fenders use a 35litre Tank, mixer, feed horn and thats it.

Might make my own......
