Dual Timing Elec Ignition

What options are there for electronic igintion/ dizzy, etc for dual mapping of petrol & LPG? All the one's I've found in threads piggyback the ECU or replace it which is overkill (?) for my unit.

I have a 3.5 low comp with Strommy carbs running LPG & Petrol (on start up to keep the carb happy) and would like the ability to run both fuels at optimum. I've thought about EFI but thought this might be a cheaper route to take?

I currently have a Crane Fireball unit.

Around 20 years ago when points in dizzies where commen there was a unit that that wired into the coil wiring that delayed the timing by 6-8 deg..
It's been a while but I think LPG was 7 deg. advanced more than petrol.
Try an LPG fitter or maybe you'll get lucky and find one at a wreckers(Pre EFI).

You could give Megajolt a bit of a look, that coupled with EDIS makes for a pretty good package. Megajolt is an ignition control unit only, it is related to Megasquirt which if loaded with the right code will do fuel and spark.
I have fitted Megasquirt which I am in the process of finishing now, today I loaded a second spark map for LPG and it works a treat.
EDIS is a Ford coil pack ignition setup that is commonly used in conjunction with the above units on Rover v8's.

The issue with dual fueling is that LPG likes a lot more advance initially with it plateauing through the middle and tapering off when at high speed cruise to a total that is less than petrol uses. So anything you do to a dizzy is at best a compromise unless you lock it up and control the spark via electronic means.

Sorry for this probable dumb question; I just need to get it right in my mind - I don't need EFI to run a dual mapping system through Megajolt, et al?

Thanks Brian, I saw Jaycar did a kit a little while ago but I'd rather buy something out of the box. I don't have the time to put one together, then redo it when I realise I've stuffed it up!

Where can Megajolt be sourced? Is it available in Aust or do we need to buy it from the US? Also, how easy it it to get EDIS and then set it all up?

Hi,
No you dont need to run efi to have dual mapping, Megajolt is stand alone.
EDIS setups are very easy to get from the USA on Ebay, Make sure you look for EDIS 8 Get the coil packs, VR sensor, Module with pigtails, the Toothed Wheel and as the yanks call them 'Spark plug wires' I got mine sent for $75.

Thanks Wayne, yes I have megajolt running pretty well on my 1976 bored 4.9ltr leyland, still pings a little at high load (peddle to the metal) at lower revs so need to back off advance a tad more....but otherwise it is great on gas and Petrol, and thanks to Wayne sorting my Gas issue.

I drive a desk for a living, but I like to play with old bikes and Rangies, but am a mug when it comes to electrics although I am learning. Yet I was able to order the Megajolt Kit and EDIS, and trigger wheel, build the megajolt, download or steal some starter maps for gas and petrol, lean on some friends, and away she went.

I chose this option as my Luminition'ed Lucas Dissy **** and broke the fingers of the rotating thingy, and the inside if the dissy had been hacked, so i had nothing to start with. A new Scorcher bosch type dissy is $600+, second hand are un knowns, so i thought why not megajolt...It starts and runs so much more easily then before even cold. In fact it now idles too fast on petrol at same settings, so I either need to retard at idle or look for some more adjustment in the carbs... I would recommend it to anyone with some time. Prob the hardest bit was choosing where to mount the coil packs... gotta look right..! And I'll probably chop the top of the dissy later to clean up the engine bay. Looks odd the dissy without the leads...

If you already have an electyronic Dissy, you could try the dual map jiggers that RPI are selling on Ebay for $216. I'm considering one for my LSE as i recon the ignition is tired...but I have just bought another EDIS8 kit from Boost Engineering on EBAY mostly for spares, but it's been so successfull I am considering the LSE next...Although I might Megasquirt that.

Oh and you should see the stuff Wayne has done to his hardly modified 76 Rangie. Very Very nice serpentine engine mods, and classy implementation of MegaSquirt and all wiring forward of the fire wall. Tis amazing what one can do with bits from the wreckers...and a bit of nouse.
