I wondered where that last photo came from when you posted it on another thread. Next time you're up that way i'd love to have an explore too. The Doyles River/Bulga Forest area has been on my list of places to explore for a while![]()
After attending the 4WD Association Meeting at Wauchope on Saturday morning I headed west to meet Simon (aka Mr ploppy) and family, Diana (aka Lotz-A-Landys), Pete (aka Bad Pete) and Jon (aka Yorkshire Jon) at the Udder Cow Cafe at Comboyne.
After a very nice lunch and coffee we all convoyed further west to find a campsite for the night with a brief stop at Ellenborough Falls along the way. Ellenborough Falls are the second highest single drop falls in the Southern Hemisphere, the highest being up near Cairns.
After being stopped along our planned route by a locked gate, we found a suitable campsite at an old logging camp where there was no shortage of nice dry firewood.
Next morning we detoured slightly to Blue Knob where we enjoyed the 360deg views and where Simon opened his Honey Shop and we were able to sample and buy some of the best honey I've tasted in a long time - Thanks Simon
We then decended to historic gold mining area known as The Cells where we had lunch at The Cells Hilton before bidding farewell to Simon & family and Diana who had to return home in order to attend other duties on Monday. Pete, Jon and I then negotiated numerous tracks to arrive at another ridgetop campsite that I had stayed at on a previous trip, once again with an abundance of good dry firewood. A nice spot with magnificient views to the west and the unknown territory that we were to tackle the next day.
Without giving away any secrets, the Monday provided us with quite a variety of terrain mixed with a few navigational challenges to eventually bring us out on Thunderbolts Way for the black ribbon run back to civilisation. Undoubtedly one of the best 4WD days I've had, with good company and through some very interesting country to which I will definately return for some more exploratory 4WDing.

I've passed through the area quite a number of times, usually on the way to somewhere further afield and often on different routes.
With the 4WD Association meeting up that way I thought it was a good opportunity to turn it into a Club recce trip and have a bit more of a look around.

Hi guys, I go to Port all the time to see the outlaws and recently did the Werrikimbe NP trip. There's a fantastic lookout called Hoppy's or Poppy's lookout off Coachwood Rd, west of Brushy Mountain camping reserve. Fabulous scenery and colours late in the day. Also Apsley and Tia falls off the Oxley Hwy not far from Walcha.
Certainly some spectacular country up that way, such as Mary's View - Carrai Plateau area north of Mooraback Camp, Wirrikimbe NP

Hi guys.
We have a hut (or manage it for the local scouts)up on the Carrai at what used to be the town of Kookaburra.
We often frequent these look outs and such and they are well worth the drive. If ever you guys wish to use it it is available for a donation to the scout group.
Regards
Eck
