Thread: 2001 Discovery - Help Wanted

G'day Members,

The Club received the following email from Chris Wright in Adelaide.

"Can you help me?

I have a TD5 2001 Discovery. 260K on the clock. Starts easy. Brilliant fuel economy. Lots of power when you need it. Turbo pressure 18 pounds.

One big problem. When negotiating steep hills it pulls well going up. On the down side the motor drops reves dramatically, will not respond to the throttle, pumps out black smoke and finally stops. Within ten seconds it starts again easily and runs normally. It only happens occasionally. Does not happen on every hill. No-one seems to be able to help me. They want to take my money in computer analysis but not cure the problem. Does this particular model have a problem? Have I got a unique problem? Can someone in your organisation give some solid suggestions?

I have had lots of stuff you find in cow paddocks but no sound suggestions.

Hope you or someone in your organisation can put me onto a solution!!

G'day Members,

Here's a new email from Chris and it looks like his Disco problems have been resolved:

"Dear Glen;

I have cured my dying TD5. I contacted a local company here; British 4 x
4. The head mechanic, who has had many years experience on Land Rovers, said the vehicle displayed the classic symptoms of a delaminating turbo hose.
It turns out that he was spot on. Although the new hose was an outrageous price the problem seems to have been cured. I hope this information may be of use to any of your members who may experience a similar problem.
