Perentie - How wet can it get?

    Hi lads.

I have a Perentie Cargo 4x4 with a canvas cover that leaks more than Julian Assange. I am aware that in the army they hose these guys inside out so my quesiton is how wet can they get? The canvas drips all over my dash ect.

I am under the impression that it is pretty much fine to let them get totally soaked (even had someone tell me that it wouldn't matter if the roof was off completely) but then when I jumped in the other day (after a big night of rain) the fuel and temp gauges had a little fog in them.

    Will it short the electrics?

    Any info is appreciated!

    Thanks

One thing that can happen if it is not dried out thoroughly is that corrosion can start in behind the dash top where water flows down the bulkhead and if yours has the fixed rubber floor mats corrosion can set in, under the mats in the footwells.

Drying it out after rain can be helped by putting it out opened up in the sun and lifting the mats by jamming used water bottles under them to allow some air circulation.

I've never come across electrical problems due to this roof leaks however that does not guarantee that it won't happen - again corrosion in spots and connectors where it is hard to dry them out is the most likely potentially damaging result.

Installing a new soft or hard top can be a very cost effective action if long term use and ownership is planned - probably cost you less than $1500 either way

Some owners reproof the canvas with a Lyddys compound but it is only a short term fix and it sounds from your description thhta it has gone a bit too far for this to be effective

Also, if you do choose to go with a new soft top, they come unpierced for that roofrack thing so it saves you having to reinstall it

You can buy them direct from robco at Marrickville - they have 'em in stock.

No love for the roof rack? I need somewhere to tie surfboards!

Thanks —*am going to get a replacement in the near future. Looking at making it a hard-top (to keep surfboards safe) if anyone is wrecking a 110.

Will have a look at Robco — thanks for the heads up!

When my gauges fog, that's when I know the engine has warmed up haha

Take the tarp off and paint the entire roof with something like Joseph Lyddy "Dry Seal"

A 2 litre can will cover the roof panel with up to a couple of coats applied with a small paint roller.

If you want better coverage over the whole tarp, get 4 litres and let it dry between coats.

Dry seal doesn't discolour the fabric like some other brand products.

Just being my pedantic self, but it was Chelsea (Bradley) Manning who leaked, Assange published the leaks!
