    Buying a perentie...

Hi, I have never owned a 4wd partly because I always thought the best way of seeing the country was on foot. However I have had the good fortune of getting an illness which has much reduced my ability to walk anywhere....! I have never really liked 4wds partly because of how they are marketed to make everyone believe they can drive anywhere, when mostly it is to pick kids up from private schools. Recently though I have noticed the perentie, seen a few on the road. Im restoring a mini and a perentie is much the same, in that they are pretty simple which I like. There are no auctions in SA and I have just been to Melbourne and looked at the current offers. Surprisingly there were only service books for three out of nine of them, the better ones didn't have them. I am sure the odometers were mostly wrong. I notice that KLR can do inspections etc, i really need someone experienced in these to have a look at them for me as realistically I can't be flying to melb or sydney every month. Has anybody any advice regarding how to have perenties checked out by a third party? Is there any solution to there being no service books being available? Thanks very much in advance!

    Hi Jon,

There is a web-site that you should look at:

The Registry of Ex Military Land Rovers. Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere.

It has a lot of information on it - about all kinds of ex-army vehicles, and there is a section on there specifically on the Perentie.

I had a funny feeling that there is a buyers guide on there as well - although I could be wrong...

    Cheers,
    GG.

Look up "BarefootDave" on here and get yourself his Perentie guide. DO NOT go to an auction without having first read his guide from front to back.

I bought without inspecting. Luck of the draw I guess but I am very happy with what I got.

Thanks everyone, good advice! When I inspected some myself I realised that I need to know more about them before I could be confident what I was buying. So I bought the buyers guide yesterday which has been quite helpful. I imagine there are not many lemons because of good maintenance but there should be ones that are better than others... I'm glad I didn't start bidding. I would be very keen on someone who knows these to inspect the ones which seem good, but I'm still not sure what to do when the service logs aren't available.

Thanks G ghost and cripes, that's my cue.
    G 'day Jon and welcome.
You are correct, rarely does the odo match the true ks covered.
The Buyers guide has helped heaps of people such as yourself who don't want to get caught with junk. With Grays preventing any starting of vehicles, you have to do all you can to avoid getting caught out.
Sorry, I can't help you out with a name of someone closer to you for inspection.
My book has inspection sheets to help you even if you can't get there in person.
    Cheers, BDave.

    Jon,

As the other have said you are really relying on a bit of luck.
When they are inspected you cannot start or drive them so major engine (unlikely) or gearbox/tc faults can't be found.
You can however get a general idea about how hard a life the vehicle has had by looking underneath at the chassis, diffs etc for damage.
I would recommend you bid on a vehicle that has a service record, but you will be up against other bidders who are doing the same thing.
Often the amount you save by "taking a chance" on a vehicle that doesn't have a service record will more than compensate for any repairs you couldn't have seen.
Good luck and go for it!!
    You wont regret owning one.
