Thanks for your input once again John, I understand it doesn't conform to the numbering system. I think I'm going to take the risk and get it shipped down to me where I can have a better look myself.

From one of the photos there is a plate within the dash that is painted over, I'm hoping this will help shed some light on it.

Either way, I'm going to keep it as it is and enjoy it. If I can find out some history that would be a big bonus.

I guess I had better join REMLR when it arrives.

There has been one for sale in Canberra that is a real bitsa, has series 3 chassis and 2A army body and mismatched components, but it aint an army one.

Make sure you verify it's a real 2A before you buy it.

You may be onto something.

Did all series 2 and 2a onwards have twin fuel tanks? Everything I can find suggests yes. With S3 vehicles only having the driver side... Like this one

Tow points on the rear suggest S3 also?

That chassis certainly looks like an Australian military Series 3. What engine is in it? As far as I know, all the S3s were sixes, but that looks like a four cylinder bulkhead. And, for what it is worth, it looks like a S3 gearlever.

Looks like a 4cyl to me.

Chassis number looks like it could be starting 913 making it (originally a 4cyl). I have been right through REMLR Website and can only turn up later 918 but mostly 940+ chassis numbers with are as you say 6cyl.

Maybe Scott was right...

It appears to be a late SIIa firewall and instrument cluster, with a SII steering wheel centre and remote horn button.

Actually, the blank steering wheel cover and side horn button were used on early 2a, so not a distinction between 2 and 2a. But certainly that steering wheel and that firewall/dash never left the factory on the same vehicle. And similarly the lifting points on the back of the chassis never left the factory with either of them.

That is certainly a four cylinder engine, almost certainly fairly early 2a - from about 1968 in Australia they had PCV, which sees the oil filler with a blank cap, not a breather (although this can be swapped).

It begins to look to me like it is a build from several vehicles.

It does indeed, basically a series 3 chassis and what I think would be a series 3 tub and gearbox, with a 2a front end (mostly).

I can't help worrying about how to register this thing and what year to give it. If it comes out with an early S3 vin it will be roughly 72? When did ADR take effect? 69?

I could get issues with headlight position and other details that would be costly.

The fact that she has registered it using only partial numbers from the chassis and somehow got it through the ACT should say it all.

I'm in a little deep now, transport is booked for Wednesday :(

Yep that's the vehicle I was thinking of.

Be great to know if the army actually built it like that.

All military but mix of 2 2A and series 3. Unique in that sense.

Does it have rover or Salisbury rear diff?
