No.5 TRAILER info wanted

Hi all I'm new to this forum. I'm of the cruiser not rover persuasion so I hope you don't hold that against me too much.

I bought a no.5 the other day and have just pulled the lunette apart and flipped the washer. The whole thing was locked up and took some work to get free. I also had clean up the washer to get it to fit in its new orientation. I'm now having trouble getting the large nut back on. I may have to take it somewhere, the last thing I want to do is cross thread that.

Otherwise it was pretty simple.

Next step is getting it through the rego process. Sounds like fun.

There are currently two trailers up for sale in the South Oz auction.
Has anyone out there experience of registering them here in SA?
Second question: the light plugs, are they 11 pin? Excuse my ignorance but I take it this is not a standard plug?

Sorry Diana but I disagree with you here

I use mine (original except for pintle removed and replaced with standard tow ball hitch) behind my defender and I love it, I knew that the trailer had no tailgate, it rides beautifully, it follows like a quality sheepdog and you hardly know its there...

If you know their short falls you will love it like I love mine, collect it and enjoy it (its great :) ) I often use mine in preference to my 6x4 treg trailer..

SBO ( I can't be bothered typing your whole title and these initials should be ....well....obvious :) )

You will need the following..

*inspection of the trailer (MR29) done at a Police station --(cost about $60 --dont quote me thats from memory and may be wrong price- most police stations do not have eftpos!)
take the details that you get from REMLR - also you will require it to have a chassis number (if you know the ARN -stamp that in eg "ARN123-123" to the chassis.) make sure its clear.. (after you find it or stamp it, rub chalk across it and light rub off, this highlights the letters, and means that its easier to read and whoever is doing the inspection spends that little bit less time theyre looking at your trailer!!, If you do not locate and or/do not add your own chassis number you will be given a 16 digit/letter number to add anyway. this way this one will have relevance and be easier to remember

* You can leave the NATO plug in situ (wrapped around the tow tube) and simply wire in the trailer wiring and standard trailer plug into the wire joiner at the rear base of the trailer.
Make sure all the lights work - If it is as mine you have a left and a right blinker, and a solitary brake/tail and numberplate light (one larger round in a metal "cup" on the right hand side.

This is legal, so long as the lenses are all orange or red (depending on use!!) and clearly visible when active.

Once you have done this inspection, take the copy of the MR29 and the receipt to motor reg office (transport sa) also take an MR1 form (can get them off the transport sa site) .

You dont need to take the trailer, so long as you have the MR29 and attached receipt, and a completed MR1 (any questions should be answered on REMLR if not just ask someone will tell you.) You should walk in and out (with a rego plate) in about 1/2 hour (takes time to enter it all etc)

Possibly the easiest rego to get...

I bought a camper trailer in Vic last year and had to apply to get permission to bring it back to SA. I was emailed a page which allowed me to take it straight home after pick up. A local car dealer was able to register it and supply plates. Would all this apply in the case of these ex military trailers?

I assume the camper was brand new? (getting the dealer to do rego) if not I am not sure how it could have been done..but permits for transport should be very straight forward so long as its roadworthy

(remember these have a lunette ring NOT a normal tow hitch, the adapter to make so it goes on a normal ball is relatively easy (mine cost abt $100 at an engineers) main part you need is the bolts around the centre tube need to be drilled correctly into the tow plate (about 8 or 10 bolts from memory, I think 8) then its simply unbolt lunette ring ( put aside in box marked "for digger" :) ) and bolt new one on...may need to extend your chains (or have some welded to the bracket when its made.

This way the trailer can be "unconverted" at a later date if so desired...
I think a search on here or REMLR will locate photos of peoples conversions easy enough to give you an idea

for the wiring, if you need , I can take a photo of how RichardO did mine (I got my trailer from him via a complicated swap/trade deal :) ) so that it simply "splices" into the joiner--if its rights all good, if its wrong for yours then its still not much lost!
this should mean you could buy trailer, have a @ 3 metre trailer cable already done (with plug already added) - get under and splice it... @3 screws..easy!

then undo 8 or so nuts on trailer centre shaft so lunette ring comes off, place premade bracket on (I assume all holes are same to fit lunettes etc?) place on bolts (and locknuts in my case) and then hitch it up and VOOM (like a dead parrot)

Yes, an authorised new car dealer can rego new vehicles using inspection authorities they have been granted, 2nd hand means a trip to "rego land"
via police station (where checks are done to ensure the rego or chassis number arent 'bodgy' and the trailer is checked to ensure not reported stolen anywhere in australia and not a rusty unlighted hulk,,,,
