    No.5 TRAILER info wanted

Hi, can someone out ther please provide me with some info on these.

I have recently purchased off Trademe (NZ) one thats rego'ed as a 1974, but think that just its date of private rego.
It has signs on it : NZ33036/ the KIWI facing away from curb (facing away indicates overseas deployment as I understand it?)/TAC 28 on olive/3 section on tarp. Black forward facing disc. Our army museum has no info available.

1/. Where is the chassis/frame number stamped.

2/. Should it have a build tag, and can I obtain a replacement

3/. What off-set should the wheels have(its got 2 types and part numbers. FV738903/no date, and 272309/dated /65) both of which I think have been swapped out and are not its originals.

4/. What tail lamps did these have. Its got 2 holes FHS and 3 holes RHS, that would take L488?. It does not have the bracket/shroud for a rear tail/plate light that appears on the Aussie ones.

    Picks to follow.

    Thanks in anticipation.

1/. Where is the chassis/frame number stamped. sometimes on rear cross member just left or tube or sometimes front cross member drivers side but on top under tub

2/. Should it have a build tag, and can I obtain a replacement compliance plate should be on front cross member on passenger side in middle, someone did make replicas a while back but haven't seen any for a long time. They where made by Ordinance factory Maribrynong 1964 was first year of production

3/. What off-set should the wheels have(its got 2 types and part numbers. FV738903/no date, and 272309/dated /65) both of which I think have been swapped out and are not its originals. 272309 would be original for early Number 5 trailers these where standard on series 2a army Land Rovers

4/. What tail lamps did these have. Its got 2 holes FHS and 3 holes RHS, that would take L488?. It does not have the bracket/shroud for a rear tail/plate light that appears on the Aussie ones. not sure for NZ configuration

    Picks to follow.

    Thanks in anticipation.

The number is sometimes stamped on the metal tab that holds the tub to the chassis frame. On my No.5 it was on the LHS front outer tab, on a mates it was on the LHS inner tab.

Don't get confused about GOF Manufactured No.5 and No.5 manufactured under later Army Contracts. There were of other manufacturers who took contracts to build the trailers to the original design, this still makes them No.5 just not GOF ones.

The first batch of No.5 were manufactured in 1963 there are lists of No.5 ARN at: Military Trailer Registration Number Lists -REMLR if you find a number on your trailer you should be able to work out the date from the Aussie ones with close numbers to yours.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I know this is a bit late, as this thread is a few months old, but the NZ No5 pattern trailers were not built in OZ. The one I have has a build plate on the chassis from an engeneering company in Hamilton, NZ. Same design so one could guess that they were built under licence

The ones coming out of Graysonline have new VIN stamped on the LHS of the drawbar, unfortunately most of these trailers were originally built in 1965 but are being dated 1985. so not eligible for historic rego for another 18 months.

The lack of tailgate is frustrating, the narrow series track, short wheelbase and lack of brakes makes them less than ideal for use behind the Defender or Disco.

Go for a Cooks or Haulmark box trailer instead.

    No.5 trailer rego?

Thanks for reply from Moderator. Well I have already paid for it, I guess should have inquired earlier as to best type. Though I'm not really planning on anything too scary with it. And thanks for info on where to find the VIN.

Perhaps I will sell or maybe just use it on the property and if needed it will give me a reasonably cheap pair of wheels and 7.50-16 tyres. I will keep an eye out for 750Kg trailer which as you say looks much more suited.

This is certainly proved correct for the trailers being sold through the NSW branch of AFM. These trailers have been sold with a NSW Blue Slip to simplify the registration process. As part of of the Blue Slip, AFM have applied for a VIN number, and stamped that number on the drawbar and declared the build date to be 1985. It is now permanently recorded in the system as a 1985 built trailer.

However, from THIS THREAD, it is apparent that the trailers being sold through AFM in Brisbane have NOT had VINs applied, or a roadworthy inspection provided. This makes it a little more complicated for the buyer in the registration process, but allows the owner to accurately identify the correct 60's build date if Historic Registration is something you wish to pursue.

Most of these trailers were built for use in South Vietnam during our military commitment there so most of them were built between 1964 and 1966 and listed as "Trailer 1/2 Ton 2 wheel" Aust.No5 (this carries on from the No 4 WW11 Jeep Trailer)

My Rego reads as Ordanance Factory ATM up to 1.02T Box. ID (chassis) 1974. and it cost me $89.40 for 12 months, yours will be dearer as you will have to pay for plates (1) if you have a problem you can quote my No5 rego No it is AI-1160 Qld and has been since about 1998.

So with the rego reading up to ATM 1.02 you could carry 750KG legally.

or,you could rego it in Qld as 1.02T and transfer to NSW Rego later this year, that would get it as 1.02T in a rego transfer,it being regoed as that in Qld.

    cheers

While most of the above is true, there were batches of No.5 trailers built in the 1980s outside the OFM/ADI by small manufacturers, the aluminium body trailers out of the RAAF are examples. Some of these trailers have a VIN not a chassis number.

In NSW RMS the No.5 is listed under manufacturer: Australian Defence Industries (ADI), the successor to Government Ordnance Factory Maribyrnong.
