Thread: Early No. 5 Trailer

I purchased a no.5 from the recent auctions.
Mine was built 1985. It has one combination stop/tail light.
It also has the brackets to hold the hoodbow. I hadn't really thought about what the brackets were for but after you mentioned it.

What year make is yours?

The two small Lucas 488 lamps were the later configuration, common on Workshop trailers. Although in later years they often went back to the large stop tail. Sometimes they even used hella replacements and even later the use of the large rectangular combination lamp similar to the lamps on Perenties.

I do not know what year my trailer was made, hence the reason for my questions.
The light system that my trailer has is not depicted in that document.

your trailer will have a chassis number on it, sometimes on the back cross member just to the right of the rear towing point, or front cross member on the left (sometimes under the tub!), if you find it under all the coats of paint go to the REMLR website and search trailer registrations and you may find it there and this will give you the Army registration number and year of manufacture.
The bulk of the trailer were made by Maribrynong ordinance factory during the mid 60's.

Pretty sure they all had the canopy bow brackets......I always remember them being a PITA when loading and unloading the trailer.

Hi Aaron

I found that out when the file eventually downloaded on my machine. What it shows is the later modifications when the L488 lamps and lenses were no longer available in Aus. There are now people doing reproductions of the lamps including the L488 L531.

What you need is the RPS from around 1972. Yes I have asked for it.

Found a hard copy RPS (1990). Self explanitory.





BTW the originals were all made by Government Ordnance Factory Maribyrnong Vic (Australian Defence Industries according to the RTA) however in the 1980s/90s new contracts were let to other often small scale manufacturers. Some of these trailers actually have a VIN rather than a chassis number.

The number for mine was actually on the tub.

What ARN is yours? The Army No5 trailers weren't produced that late. I don't know where the inspection place dreamed that date up (because there is no compliance plate or other date stamped anywhere on the trailer), but it appears to be the date they've written on the Blue Slips for the trailers at auction. There were some "No5 copy" trailers built for the RAAF in the 80's but they have alloy bodies and commercial wheel hubs and axles (and sit lower).

Go to The Registry of Ex Military Land Rovers. Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. then go to Registration Numbers>Trailer registration numbers. Your auction listing will record the original Army Registration number, like 101-xxx, 154-xxx or 173-xxx, etc. Look up that number on REMLR and you will find the ACTUAL build date of your trailer, Most were built in the mid to late 60's.
