Between the condition it was in and these issues it sure does sound like you have run over a black cat with it.

I know things are different in a Vic, but the one thing I did have to do was put flares on my Sankey trailer as the new tyres I fitted were well outside the guards. Not sure on how others have gone.

The rest of the process in Vic is easy so no dramas getting a VIN or rego so can't help there sorry.

surely you can list it as home built....

if tyres are hanging out try series rims as i believe the offset is narrower and the tread should sit inside the guard

Did you get it sorted? Just bought one myself so curious to see how you went.

The No5 are listed under manufacturer ADI (Australian Defense Industries) in the RTA makes and models database.

Yes the tyres do stick outside the wheel arches, this is because the Army stuck the 6" ROH rims equivalent of the those on the Perentie to give common spare wheel and to bring the trailer track closer to the 110 track. If you want it to comply you either need to stick mudguard extensions on or re-fit a pair of the original Series IIA 5.5" +ve offset rims off a series 109. (What the owner does later is up to him).

I also stuck a pair of mudflaps and added front an side reflectors to finish off the compliance issues.

Got it done last week actually...

Found a guy that knew what was what and which way was up, etc etc.

Ended up blue slipping it as home built with a new VIN. He overlooked the guards, and I'd already put mud flaps and reflectors on it. Registered it with the pintle lunette on it and added my custom coupling bracket later.

All good.

But there is no way I would ever recommend anyone buy a number 5, other than as a collectors item or farm hack (to never be on the road).

I was going to do one up, or one of the number 4 Jeep trailers we have, but give me two weekends and a welder and I'll have built a trailer 3 times as good.

Agreed, I owned one for a couple of months in 2014 then sold to a mate for cost price ($309 at auction!). Possibly the most useless box trailer I've come across, until modifications such as a tailgate and spare wheel holder to give some drawbar weight are added. Until then, they make for a mediocre boat and a mediocre trailer.

One has to remember they were never designed for a long wheelbase but for a shorty. They have far too many problems when used behind a 110, not the least that they are a heavy trailer without brakes where half the legal GTM is used with the weight of the trailer itself.

I have two and a workshop variant, but only as IsuzuToo Eh suggests for their collector value. In fact even for that issue, after having it almost jackknife in an emergency stop on a motorway, I now only use it empty and at local shows.

Just finished 3,400 km off road and on road towing a number 5 with it's army pintle hitch and NATO plug with (home made) adaptor. The trailer remains completely original. Canvas cover fitted and loaded with an extra land rover spare wheel in the front of the trailer. Carrying a load of modular boxes which fit between the internal wheel arches and a larger size box for the front and rear of the trailer. Gas cylinder clamped inside, bolted to the holes along the leading edge of the internal guards. The trailer was brilliant. No dust inside, superb tracking and following along all roads but really came into its own with river crossings and everything remained dry and dust free. The other trailers on the trip did nowhere as well and were problematic. You do get a few strange looks, as a land rover owner I enjoy envy however the only issue I have is the length of the drawbar in car parks. The advantages far outweigh the issue of length. Best $409 I ever spent!
