Toyota made a air cooled 700 to 800cc horizonally opposed motor for the Toyota 700 in the early 1960s.
Simple adaptor plate used, bolts in well, but is longer as the cooling fan sits on the end of the motor instead of on top of it.
Toyota still have full backing of parts for its motor in Aust and it has more torque than the standard Puch motor.
Sounds and drives like the standard Puch motor.
The haffie didn't have Kreeper gear working and rear diff lock was hard to enguage.
The Stude was running a 50/50 diesel / Petrol fuel mix to use some fuel from a miss fuelled vehicle.
I have a Studebaker winching vid and Haffie lifting the wheels and very bogged vid coming.

There used to be a fellow in the LROCV with a VW 1200cc engine in a Haffie was great at gymkhanas, if he could keep the tyres in contact with the ground and not spinning.

At the time I owned my LWB* Haflinger, I had a copy of Overlander magazine with an article about a Haflinger that had been fitted with a 1200cc Mazda engine from a Bongo van.

He had new gears cut for the portals to take advantage of the extra power and gave him a higher top speed. Since the governor limited top speed in 5th gear with the original engine to 70km/h, I can see why he might want to do that.

* Long Wheel Base is a relative term. It was still shorter than most other 4WDs. It was only long in comparison to the standard Haflinger.
